I posted this question in the water pump failure thread, but no one responded to whether there is any potential problem with this. I am about to do the TB service and have a new OEM water pump to install.

I would like to know this too.
Would you do this so you would not have to remove the cam gears and rear cover? I just got the CRD FSM and will look in to this. :pepper:

I believe, but don't know how to be certain, that especially if you have an OEM replacement it'll match. The old OEM unit has an o-ring, so I'd take of the front bolts, remove that front part with the pulley and impeller, then replace with the new o-ring, impeller, and bolts and a touch of permatex grey to make sure it seals well; being careful to torque the bolts for aluminum (probably 20N-m /16-18 ft-lbs or so?

Because the pulley sticks through the rear timing cover you'd still need to loosen it enough to get the pump out - sadly. But you wouldn't have to take anything else 'back there' off, including the rear nuts on the pump itself or the three 8mm bolts that hold the manifold with the hose nipples to the back of the pump.

Easier - but not perfect.

I'll take apart my old water pump next weekend and see if that is a feasible option. If you can borrow the cam locking tools, removing the pump isn't that much work extra work.

You might PM Oldpoopie, the TDI wrench. He asked the same question last year.
