New guy from central florida here. 8)

I Just wanted to stop in and say hi as I am trying to work out a deal on a 2006 Jeep Liberty CRD 4x4 Sport with around 60,000 miles. I test drove it yesterday and it runs great is in great shape and the owner is asking $13,500. I have had my eye on the Liberty for quite some time and thought if I every find a CRD at a good price with low miles, I am going to grab it. Well that time has come. The only fear I have is that this Liberty was clearly flat towed behind a RV and still has the tow bar mounts up front. The ball joints and steering components look and feel to be in good shape with no play, transfer case shifts in an out of gear easily, etc.. Is there anything else I need to look for. Once I purchase the vehicle I will follow the steps in the CRD newbie guide, but before I purchase is there anything I need check out otherwise. The seller has agreed to let me take it to a mechanic to have them check it out, but to be honest I am not sure my regular mechanic can handle the CRD, he says he can. Whats the average cost to own/maintain one of these, not a huge concern? Whats the usual big ticket repair items I can expect? I understand the timing belt needs to be replaced before 100,000, but is there any other obvious items. If I can get close to 30 mpg out the Liberty I will be doing good, I currently drive a 2005 Hummer H2 SUT on 37" Goodyear MTRs, which I will be keeping for wheeling and camping, etc.. Its paid for and lets face it, no one will give me what its worth, especially with all my mods. The Liberty will be used for my work vehicle to save on fuel and wear and tear on my H2. And yes the Hummer gets wheeled quite often. I'd post pics, but since this is not a Hummer forum I'll refrain unless you guys want to see pics and its ok with the admins.

Welcome, Recommend you print out the newbie guide and give it to your mechanic or send him the link.

I am almost 100% positive I'll buy this one, but since the seller is allowing me to have a mechanic check it out, so if there are some pointers for some specific things to look for that would be helpful. I don't want my mechanic performing cachtup maintenance on a car that I don't own yet, just want to make sure he checks out some of the known problem areas.

Found another one close by, 2006 limited for about the same price has about 10,000 more miles, but its missing the black ABS intake cover on the engine. Why would this be missing, does this mean it had major work done and they forgot or lost the cover to put it back on?

If you are referring to the black cover over the engine that says CRD on it, it is mostly decorative. Many people have removed it and left it off.

First thing when buying a CRD ask the owner for the services records. There are to major points to look for the fuel filter head and the torque convertor. Next inspect the inter cooler hoses they should be 2 large black hoses going to and from the intercooler to both sides of the motor. If they are coated heavily in oil plan on replacing them probably within 3 months to a year. Next thing drive it there should be a little turbo lag and a little smoke at take off and full throttle. Also always check for the check engine light to be functioning properly I have run into a few people taking the check engine light out (dealerships included). Also find a good steep hill and drive up it like you normal would if you feel any shudder then the torque convertor is the old style and I think can still be replaced by a dealer under the recall.
