So this morning on the way home from dropping my brother off at school I noticed my speedometer had quit working. I know for a fact that it was working previously on the trip because I passed a cop so I looked to check my speed. It was like it came out of nowhere

Get it on a scanner and see if it show 0 or you can see the speed.

Check the pickup sensor on the rear diff....make sure it is plugged in properly and there have been lots of reports of the nearby cable rubbing on nearby cables/bodywork.

I had this on my 2002 (loose connector) and after re-plugging it the speedo worked again but I had a red light for about two weeks after which time it cleared itself. :)

Just wanted to let everyone know it was the speed sensor on top of the rear diff. Went to advance and they said their scanner would not pick it up so I just went ahead and ordered the sensor for $40 ($35 for me since I have some friends up there :) ) got it yesterday after work and put it in and everything was working properly. Thanks everyone for the replies!

I actually read somewhere of a recall put out by Chrysler regarding the diff sensor on 2005 KJs.....I gather yours is a 2004 KJ.

Apparently the diff fluid inside these 2005 models would eat the diff sensor.
Sensor needs replacing and diff oil replaced. :(

Hmmm well the new sensor is in, should I have replaced the diff fluid too? idk if that was what the problem was or it was just old....I have 155k miles on it.

Well at that mileage you should have changed the diff fluids at least 9 times already so that would not have been the cause.

No, as I remember the recall for the diff sensor only related to some 2005 models....they probably produced a batch with the wrong diff oil inserted. :?

I have replaced the fluid a few times. Probably around 4 or 5 more so than 9 though
