Please Help Identify....

So, I was poking around my KK, hitting spots of rust with some rustoleum in preparation for my skids and install of my trans temp and oil pressure gauges, when I got a little confused.

First, I was under the impression that the KK has a separate transmission cooler, and that it was this...

But when I traced these lines, I found that they go to the power steering pump. So I guess I have a PS cooler. Is this standard on the KK?

I decided to trace the lines from the transmission, thinking that then, I couldn't fail. I did succeed and was rather surprised to find this:

Which is the lines from the transmission entering the radiator.
It looks like it shares the A/C condenser, but I could be wrong... So this is standard as well, I guess?

On another unrelated note though, what the heck is this thing?

Your logic holds up on your first two questions. I thought that external cooler under the bumper was the trans cooler too, but evidently it's for power steering if that's where the lines go - you've convinced me! I think I read somewhere that the trans cooler is part of the OEM radiator, and it's all a one piece unit. As you traced your trans lines to the radiator, that is consistent with what I've read, and again, I learned something! The last question about the electronic doohickey behind the grille: I am 99% sure that is the outdoor temperature sensor. It tells you the external temp on your dash.

You're correct on the first one too, that is indeed the power steering cooler.

The little probe looking thing is in fact the temperature sensor for your display in the instrument cluster.

Seems like a bad spot for that sensor. I notice a drop in temp by about 5 degrees once I get up to highway speed. You'd think they'd find a spot that doesn't get as much wind.

If you look in my third picture, you can see the trans cooler/AC condenser as it's the most forward radiator.

The computer compensates the temperature for your traveling speed actually. And the AC condensor and transcooler are built together had to replace it before not a fun job. And the PS cooler was actually and engineering correction they had some issue with destroying pumps in the test vehicles.

So, is the top or bottom of the radiator the trans cooler? Just in case I feel like adding a fan later... I think it's the top, just not 100%

Well the easiest way to tell is to see where then AC lines come in. I am pretty sure the AC is the top and the transcooler is the bottom. And two electric should solve any heat issue you could possibly ever have if any at all.

I've been monitoring my temp on this roadtrip I'm currently on, it actually rarely gets above 125 while driving down the highway. It got up to 155 in a traffic jam on a hill, but no higher. I'm not carrying any weight right now though, so I might need that fan later on for trail running, but not crucial at all right now.

What do you have now? My KK came with an electric fan. I read somewhere about a clutch fan for tow packages but I haven't confirmed it.

I have the electric fan too. Someone else on the forum has both in their KK, but from what I understand, that's a rarity. I haven't had any trouble with my engine overheating, though.

What I did find out was that the transmission temperature that the computer reads does NOT affect the fan behind the radiator, so you could completely overheat the transmission and never have the fan come on as long as the engine is the right temperature. This is part of my reason for installing a gauge. Now I just need to figure out which part of the cooler is for the transmission and stick a fan there for when I need it.

On a positive note, I took some very slow, steep hills in Missouri over the weekend and still barely hit 175 on my gauge, so looking good so far on cooling for the tranny. It wasn't offroading though, so I think I'll still need one for that eventually.

Hi Phil, I'm curious how you are monitoring your transmission temperature. Are you using a Scangauge II? If so, what is the setting you're using to be able to see the tranny temp? Thanks. My apologies for hijacking the thread.

It's cool

After some research, I found that you can't read the tranny temp off the computer because its coded for dealer use only. :furious:

I installed a gauge sending unit in the soft-line where it heads into the cooler using some threads from my old forum. Here, and here. It works really well. It is a little terrifying when you see how drastically your tranny temp fluctuates from normal use, but you get over that quick :mrgreen:

The temperature on my gauge most likely isn't perfect, but it's close enough that I can determine well ahead of time whether I'm going to have a problem. I hope this helps!
