is it smart to put 1.5" wheel spacers on a stock KJ? if not, what are the consequences?

Will set the tire/wheel out far enough you'll have rubbing issues in the front wheelwells more than likely

Lift will set you back about 750 or so
Thats new springs / shocks front and rear etc.
Any cheaper and you get what you get, bad ride, worse handling etc
Do it right one time and forget it

I used a Daystar 2.5" lift for years with great results. It is not the same as a real lift, but will get what you want for much less money.
http://www.boulderbars.com/kjproducts.htm The lift is $155, Rear shocks are $85 each. Easily installed in a day with the right tools. It will serve you for daily driving and light to medium off road. I know, I lived it. I didn't have the money to do it "right" in the beginning either. I needed tires and decided to do the budget lift and get the tires I wanted.

As a matter of fact, I will do you one better. I have the complete Daystar lift sitting in my garage. Installed on a set of crd front struts and a set of Rancho rear shocks. If you want em, let me know. Just pay for the shipping and they are yours. Send me an email if you are interested. :JEEPIN:
