See Sir Sam's NOOB guide for a video "how to" on bleeding the fuel filter head and info on how to distinguish the leak prone 1s gen head from the 2n gen. The short version is bleed it just like brakes; pump until hard; crack bleeder to vent fluid/air (I like a bit of vinyl hose into a catch can so I can see what comes out and avoid fuel mess); close bleeder; repeat until no air comes out.

No matter how I try I can not get fuel to come out of the bleeder screw

So, it's like bleeding a brake line, right? Meaning, you leave the wrench on there and open it while pushing down on the plunger, close the bleeder, lift your hand from the plunger, open bleeder, push down, repeat (etc).

To be sure you're not just sucking in air when the pump lifts.

?

How long since the last fuel filter change?

Mark

I changed the filter about 4-5 months ago

Well a lift pump should solve it if the new filter head doesn't. And a lift pump should also show you where the leak is if you don't want to replace filter head first.

Yep... it is the fuel head. just make sure not to mess it up when you put the new one. I had the exact same issue.

Comments:
1. when you order the new filter head be sure to order the wiring pigtail too.
2. the wiring pigtail wire colors don't match; just hook up with as close a size match as possible. There will be 2 wire sets, don't know why as you only use one. There are no instructions in the wire package so you may have to briefly consider how the wires fit into the new blue plug, I don't recall how but it was rather obvious.
3. the new head comes with a new filter and WIF sensor installed. Save your old WIF just in case.
4. push the fuel hoses off the old head's fittings don't try to pull them as they just grab tighter.

msilbernagel - it might not hurt to press on the primer bulb while cracking the bleeder (like pushing the brake pedal when bleeding brakes) but on my bleed setup using clear vinyl tubing I found that when I pumped the bulb until hard and simply cracked the bleed screw, stuff came out (if you have a heavy dose of air in there the 1st time or 2 it may be just air which you can hear) with no tendancy to go back in.

I think you've described the preferred method, for sure.

Cummins lift pump.

I've never touched my primer bulb nor the bleeder valve.

That's the route I took - swapped the wire & float from the original (they're shaped slightly differently) so the fuel levels would read the same, trimmed the tabs a bit (they're clocked slightly differently) and never looked back.

I pulled the injectors recently and when it was time to fire it up, it was nice to have it prime itself so quickly...

Pigtail wire color doesn't matter much as it does not match stock wire color to fuel heater plug. Just match up the wires as close as possible based on size keep the "big" and "little" wires on the same side of the plug as stock. For simple minded folks like me do the wire swap one at a time and you cannot mess it up especially since the plug only goes in one way.
