Got rear ended by a small car. Everyone is OK thankfully. The hitch receiver took most of the blow by bending and pulling off the frame. So, even though the car was probably totaled, the KJ suffered no body damage other than a tiny dent in the bumper. Exhaust is bent too, whatever. The scary thing is that the receiver pushed the gas tank forward a few inches into the axle, and now the tank is squeezed between the receiver. There was a recall some time ago for ZJs and WJs catching fire in rear end collisions, blamed on a gas tank sitting in a similar spot to where it does on the kj, between the bumper and axle. I hate to think what would have happened if I were hit harder.

In any case, it looks like the receiver saved the rest of the rear end a lot more damage.

Glad everyone is ok. As to the KJ you probably need to have the staightness of the "body/frame" checked, a good body shop can easily do so, before signing off on any insurance claim and that claim should cover the check even if it reveals no added damage. Maybe your hitch did do very good.

There's a reason NATO and the US Military switched to HDPE fuel cans from the venerable a while back... safety (especially while being transported in a plane or other vehicle) You can shoot the things with a rifle round or melt them in a fire (with some fuel in them) and they don't explode, they puncture or leak out with no sparking or sharp points to cut/damage other things.

Also, once you make a mold, they're a heck of a lot cheaper to make than steel fuel tanks.

Lets hear it for polyethylene!

I have been waiting to get a hitch, and I thought that it would add to the safety of the vehicle, but was not sure if it would help all that much. Thanks for the post. I am going out this week and installing one. Can't be too safe! Plus I want to hall bikes this summer. 8)
