I am doing the 100K tune up and have determined in addition to all the timing belt parts, serpentine belt, radiator hoses, water pump and thermostat that I want to also replace the decoupler and the serpentine tensioner. The issue I am running into is trying to figure out which decoupler to order. In several of the threads I have read it talks about the hex versus splines and what I would like to know is in order to identify that do I have to pull the dust plug out or because I have a dust plug it means I have the decoupler with splines?

The complete tool kit is 99 bucks. The only way to go.

Sorry I might not be following you. Are you saying that there is no way to determine which pulley I have prior to taking it apart (no external discernible difference)? My reason for asking is that I would like to order the replacement pulley before taking it apart. Thanks again.

I honestly cannot answer your question but just to get a thought out there - does it matter which type you use so long as it's a quality replacement? As far as I know the front portion of the alternator it mounts to is the same.

I didn't realize that both types of couplers fit the alternator. I thought there might be different alternators or shafts and that the pulleys were specific to the alternator. Is there a preference on which coupler to use? Thanks!

If you don't get a definitive answer you might ask at http://www.maniacelectricmotors.com/ I know some forum members have used them for alternator service.

Except that Gates link, which I've seen before, does not list anything for the 05/06 CRD 2.8L engine or the 3.7L gasser for that matter.

The OEM parts # appears to be 53013554 with either AE or AF as the latest suffix (ID parts has that in stock). The Litens catalog lists Litens 920720 (an OAD pulley) as the replacement for the 05/06 CRD 2.8L engine (American Engines has that).

The Facet AZ-0978 is "supposed" to also work but I cannot find any data I'm willing to rely on as to how well it would work. The only "tests" I've seen are by Litens which while possibly accurate is not unbiased.
