My jeep has 31k miles. Maybe 3-3.5k on the 2.5 jba lift (installed last nov). Maybe 2 weeks ago I started hearing this noise. Checked all torques except the nut on the top of the coil over which is probably the hardest nut to get to.

I had a buddy rock the jeep while I was underneath and From the sound and feel of it, it seems to be coming from the top of the coil over near the top plate.

Does this sound like the nut on the top of the coil over is loose? I paid a shop $40 to assemble them and I can't remember for the life of me if I checked the torque on that nut when I got home :banghead:

Edit. For clarification, I have the 2.5 ome setup and stock A arms

I'll bet the bushings isolating the shock rod from the top plate are worn. The rod is probably contacting the top plate. I think Digger had this problem.

I think I've pinpointed the general area of the source of the noise. Doesn't sound like its coming from the typical places I've heard about such as the stabilizer, a ball joint, or an engine mount (at 31k :dizzy: ). I don't see any torn boots or grease anywhere either.

Where can I order the bushing? My kk is my dd so I don't want to tear out the coil over without being prepared to replace whatever I find.

having only done my suspension once, i dont remember how the bushing is installed. I'm guessing im going to have to compress the spring, remove the shock nut, and replace the bushing.

from looking at a few images of our coilovers, it looks like the bushing is integral to the top plate. does this sound right? I havent been able to find any replacement bushings, but it looks like a replacement top plate is about $60. KYB, Monroe, and Gabriel. There are also Moog plates on the JBA site for $78

any recommendations?

I would take apart the suspension and take a better look at it first. Iirc the bushings are part of the top plate but they do come out and they have washers but in to them.

ok. from the looks of this picture, it sounds like maybe the bushing is being completely crushed axially, and the washer is hitting the top of the strut plate.

i do hear it when i get compression on bumps, but it seems to be worse on the extension immediately after a bump

is it possible that the bushing would have enough play that the rod would shift in the transverse direction and hit the top plate? this would seem to correlate more to what I am hearing, as the rod could be shifting from one side to the other on compresion and extension. if this is the case, this problem seems much more urgent than I thought because I don't want to notch the rod and cause a stress concentration that could break the rod.

sooo, i finally got around to taking the coilover out.

compare this image to the one above:
Image

looks like the bushing is completely crushed to me...

found a couple of small holes in my UBJ when removing the coilover. gives me an excuse to buy Al's A arms

update:

replacing the top plate seems to have fixed it. i had a shop replace the top plate, and when i got the parts back, the original plate and bushing had become completely separated
