Howdy! New CRD owner with a question just to confirm about my Jeep. I've owned it for 6 weeks now, and enjoyed every bit of it. Anyways, to the question.

Up until last week, I'd fueled up at three different places. The closest to home on my 40 mile commute has straight diesel without a biodiesel blend package that my Jeep has taken exception to the two times I've gotten fuel there. The place I'd always planned to fill up whenever possible, the end of my 40 mile commute) is a B5-B20 station and the Jeep runs fine there. Same with the third station in the city closer to home. Long story short, on my way to work the other day the fuel light came on and I needed to stop at a new station along my route that I hadn't stopped at yet. And when I got there I discovered they carry LSD. Knowing that the ULSD came after my manufacture year, I went ahead and fueled up and the Jeep has been loving it! I have not gotten through my tank yet to fill up again, but I've gone further off the gauge at each "point" on it then I was on the ULSD. And the engine runs noticeably smoother and is noticeably quieter from outside, too. Any ideas what I can except for a mileage increase on the LSD? Was getting 24-25 before. Hope it's not too good to be true.

Before I make the Grandview Shell station with the LSD my "only" fuel point, I wanted to make sure that it won't hurt me later. I had found this site before I even got my Jeep, so the EHM/ORM are in place. So potential buildup issues are (mostly) negated I believe.

Also, any input on how long the whole process takes to get a GDE tune from order placed, receiving, and then the return of tuner deposit? I've got a 1,000 dollar job transfer bonus coming towards the end of this month and have been debating between a GDE tune or a gym membership renewal and PS3. ^_^ At 20% increase in fuel mileage it would take about 7 months to recapture the GDE cost, I've figured roughly.

I'm not sure if what you're getting is LSD. By law, all highway diesel must now be ULSD. Anyway, ULSD itself didn't reduce the soot put out by an engine, it just removed most of the sulfur which poisons soot control exhaust pipe devices.

Just pulling tbe bio might account for your experience.. if you rig is stock, you probably have a relatively small air leak into the fuel system at either the fuel filter or fuel line fittings near the tank - and the higher viscosity fuel makes that a little worse; that's where the noise comes from, since bio would typically quiet the engine down (more accurately, the high pressure pump/CP3).

Removing the bio also improves mileage.

If you haven't changed your fuel filter, doing so may help with the other stuff. A fuel pump would help still more, most likely.

On the GDE tune turn around time you may want to call or email Keith at GDE. When I got my original tune and its update I sent my ECU in via USPS flat rate box priority mail and it was about 2 days both ways so send the ECU on Monday have it back with the tune on Thursday or Friday. My current GDE stage II turbo tune took no time at all since I have the flash tool so all I had to do was down load my current tune; email it to Keith; upload the turbo tune to the flash tool; flash my ECU with the new tune - total time ca. 25 minutes each for download/upload.

I'm speculating but the ECU exchange and flash tool loan probably both involve you providing at least your VIN to Keith beforehand (I'm not sure about injector codes); about 4 days to get the ECU/tool to you and return same to Keith using the same USPS shipping; and time to process refund which for me is a total unknown but given Keith's customer service it shouldn't be much time at all.

As to LSD as far as I know that has not been legal to sell for road use in the US for several years and I'm not sure you can even find it for off road use.

Hello Tiarnon and welcome.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that when you reference LSD you are actually meaning ULSD (Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel), is that accurate?

The ULSD is 15ppm, as you probably know. It will not harm anything in your fuel system. The system, i.e. the injection pump and injectors, have hardened parts in them. Wear is minimized with hardened parts, but not eliminated. The fuel, including the sulpher content, acts a lubricant to the fuel system. When higher levels of sulpher were present, many of the internal parts were not hardened. As a result, when the sulpher content dropped to what we have now, older equipment had issues until they were serviced with new/hardened internals

You can prolong the life of the injectors and pump, to what exact degree I am uncertain, by including fuel additives such as Stanadyne, Performance and Lubricity, as well as changing your fuel filter with good frequency. This filter change interval should be less than or equal to 25,000 miles. Be on the look out too for algae. If present, use a good biocide and plan to change your filter with some frequency until it is flushed from your tank and lines. Hope this helps. Again, welcome.

I, too, rather doubt you got a tank of LSD. 500 ppm LSD is not supposed to even be available anywhere in the states now. My guess is that what you got, in Iowa, was the first tank of actual "summer diesel" instead. If so, you might expect your mileage to improve by about 10%. It is about now that retailers and distributors phase in non-winterized fuel. I think what you encountered is a station that just never bothered to replace the sticker on the pump. There has always been a lot of that going around.

Well Kieth at GDE usually takes about a day to turn it around and ship it back to you so i would say probably 4 days max depending on how you ship it. If anything just give Kieth a call he can tell you very quickly how long to expect. Also if you did get a hold of LSD it was probably dyed (off-road) diesel and i have run it before and it did run great. Nice and quiet because the extra sulfur acttually lubricates all the fuel system parts allowing them to work more effeciently. This is why people who can't get a hold of bio-blends will pour some 2 cycle oil in thier tanks.
