So I'm getting an 06 CRD this Thursday, I know Crown in the best for undercoating. Since I live in Ontario Canada I get lots of salt in the winter and want to protect it.

Question, there is minor surface rust, mainly discolouration on the under body, should I paint stuff with a rust paint first before I get it undercoated?

Whats others thoughts about rust protection? I might put on one of the electric sacrificial ion protections too at some point.

I'd get an N95 mask and some goggles, get her up in the air, and hand sand every area with rust down to the bare metal. Then I'd hit it with a good primer. Then I'd do undercoating.

The Ziebart on mine has a 10yr warranty. There are a few spots that wore off since last year (the rear diff mostly) so they'll have to slather some more on there next month.

I'm thinking I might just do it that way. Not into sanding might just use a wire wheel and lightly, I'll try and see. Only thing I hate about paint is if I take suspension parts off etc and the bolts are coated its a pain, but better then rust I guess.

I have access to a hoist etc so no biggy, and I can get N95 mask with shields so its all good.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Eastwood has a rust converter - chemically stops the rust
http://www.eastwood.com/rust-solutions.html

although where you use that or something else - you need to stop the rust before you coat it -
otherwise - it'll keep rusting under the coating and you won't see it until it corrodes through.

I've used POR-15 with success.
http://www.por15.com/faq.asp
It's lasted longer than so called "Rust converters" and you can paint over
it as well.

I agree with Ryn7, I have used POR-15 on the entire under side of my 28 Model A Ford 8 years ago and no signs of rust since.

Wished it was a law here in the liberal, high tax state of Maryland

Were not as liberal as you'd think (actually a 50/50 split with a slight lean towards being blue) and plus we dont get enough snow to warrant it being a law. Well maybe if you lived in Appalachia Maryland I could see this, but the majority of the state lives east/bellow/near the fall line where snow is nearly non existent.

Well I lean to the grey, as for the statement liberals I am talking about the crew in Annapolis. Deep Creek we do get some snow. What part of the state are you from? Yes I agree that most of the state is not in the snow belt any more. I can say that they really salt the roads heavy around Baltimore.

Funny thing is my home state does not use salt at all on the roads.

Eastwood sells the POR too - the idea is to use the rust converter and then cover that.

POR seals and therefore assumes that it's perfectly dry prior to paint, if you trap any moisture - it'll keep rusting.

Currently central Maryland but I spent most of my early days in the lower Appalachia and southern maryland. Despite living just on the other side of the fall line all we get is cold rain and yes they salt for that :banghead: . Sadly all salt does, other then eat through cars, is melt the snow so it turns into ice at night as well as ruin the environment.

As for political sentiments well central Maryland is a hot bed for liberals, but then again most of them are "yankee transplants".

Sadly the drivers here suck at snow driving. My anut lives at a high elevation in Colorado and swears by a FWD volvo as a snow vehicle, whereas here people HAVE to have AWD to get them out of their driveway and into the ditch down the street.

It's the same here. I remember when I first moved out we got a snow storm in November and the director of the state DOT got on TV telling people to use tire chains for all trips, no matter how short. I grew up in upstate NY and never used chains, I didn't even own any.

LoL chains??? Yeah I grew up around the fall line so Im used to little to no snow and the occasional blizzard every 5 or so years, but at least I know how to drive in the snow unlike so many around here. Hell my KJ had an open rear and I ALWAYS turned ESP off during snow driving and 2wd was enough for the snow we get around here.

There are a lot of ways to go about it, depending on how much work you want to do. removing the loose rust is always a good idea. Remember rust (iron oxide) is a chemical process requiring air for oxidation, moisture is an accelerator but air is the key. convert it and seal it with something like POR-15 and you shouldn't have any problem.

Keep in mind to spray inside the frame rails and try to get any converter or sealant into every possible place to get the best possible protection. Most people only worry about the outside of undercarriage when alot of the time the rust starts on the inside and eats it's way out from there.
