Hey everyone!

We're trying to do a alarm/remote start install on my 06 sport crd and I can't seem to locate/determine the color of the 'wait to start' wire coming from the back of the cluster. Does anyone know what color it is or where it meets up with the ignition wire? I've been all over the net trying to find a reference to it but most wiring schematics have it listed as N/A.

Love the forum. It's helped me immensely since I picked up my CRD KJ. Looking forward being a member for a long time.

Cheers,
Andy

The 'wait-to-start' curly-cue lamp is controlled via a CAN message, so there's no wiring to be found in the harness.

I'm curious: why are you trying to install a remote starter on a CRD? If it is for the purpose of warming the engine up before you have to climb in to drive to work, you are wasting your time. Diesels in general do not warm up very well at all while idling. This one will warm up just fine from below freezing temperatures in only a couple miles at highway speeds. But sitting in your driveway at those temperatures, it will simply never reach operating temperature, no matter how long you let it sit there wasting fuel.

Stupid question: what is a 'wait to start'? (glow time? If so you could maybe tap into the glow relay wiring)

Even with a working viscous heater?

Yep. Viscous is designed only to give a bit of early start to cabin heat at best and to the extent it works it cuts out way before operating temp and barely off the cold mark IIRC.

well remote start may not be totally crazy but not going to work so well. My build sheet says my CRD has remote start but on our model years its a separate remote that I never had.My local dealer can't get one. after a few winter mornings at 15 degrees or colder, seeing how mine would not start with out a few seconds wait for the glow plugs and that it warms up quite fast once I had a good tstat installed I gave up on the idea of remote start. If I didn't have heated seats to warm me until the heat was up I'd invest money in that instead of remote start.

I don't have a remote start but would like one. I realize it won't get to operating temp. However, when it is really cold I like to let it run for a few minutes to get a little heat in the engine before taking off. While the viscous heater doesn't warm the cabin substantially, it does get get the defrosting along the way despite the engine being really cold. These things are a bit short on power too until you some heat into the engine and merging onto a freeway can be a bit dicey.

So if someone is hoping for a fully warm vehicle before going it won't help much. If you don't want sit in a vehicle that is at single digits inside until it has a bit of heat in the engine...personally I like to see that the gauge has at least moved, remote start would be a nice thing to have.

I know I shouldn't talk from North Florida but I have seen winter well north of here and if you have access to an electric outlet I'd recommend investing your money in a good extension cord and timer. Plug the beast in; set timer for 2-3 hrs before start; enjoy quick starts and warm heater air flow right away.

From all I've heard remote starts are a real headache to get and keep working right.

Agreed that plugging in is the most effective. The only thing is that it doesn't help for the parking lot at work.

I grew up in KY and didn't experience this much, but in Michigan you'll sometimes have these days...or weeks...I absolutely hate...it'll be beautiful and sunny and single digits F outside. It's just too cold for the weather to do anything else other than clear and sunny. Or the other alternative, spend the day snowing and sleeting which results in a mess to clean up.

The concern on the reliability of these things is valid. Unfortunately you can't read up on these in consumer reports or the equivalent. My brother gave us a system he had received as a gift that wouldn't work with his car. We had the unit installed in my wife's car. The installer warned the brand didn't have the best reputation, and he was right in that it stopped working within a year. ...happened to be the brand Crime stoppers.

I have read positive things about products from DEI. One their brands is Viper. I think the quality of the install is a big thing. If one reads the Viper website they now state that the warranty is only valid if purchased and installed from an authorized dealer. Part of this may be to help their dealers out as well. They even go on to specify that the is void if purchased from a number of online merchants.

My brother has gotten several years of good service out of remote starters in his vehicles, but I don't know what the brands are.

some of the better units (and at least one that i'm familiar with - compustar) has an adjustable delay in lieu of a w-t-s light. without a programmer i think you can set it to 2 or 10 seconds..something like that. 10 seconds is more than enough.

Alarm systems with remote starters are common down here in south Florida. Slight difference is that most people use it to warm the engine, and primarily get the air conditioner on to cool the cabin! I have a Clifford alarm system in one of my vehicles, and have not had any problems with it. .02

I think that is the other brand Directed Electronics sells their units under.
