Mine would pop out of reverse and grind. I had to hold it in HARD or it would kick out. Reading the TSBs, I concluded that somebody had been a spazz and attempted stuffing it in reverse at highway speed; bending the internal linkage assembly. Not hard to do really, considering you have to keep tension on the shifter as you draw it back from 5th. Too much tension and off you go into reverse.

Yeah, I would love to call anyone that does that a spazz, but this transmission has no lockout at all, so it's quite easy to do that accidentally. 5th to 4th isn't the issue nearly as bad as 4 to 6 or anything else. Accelerate in a low gear, get to highway speed, and try to put it directly to 6. Nope!
In the future, I guess A). nobody else is allowed to drive my jeep but me, and B). I will ONLY shift into 6 from 5!

I bought a used transmission from a wrecker for $1000 with a 100 day guarantee. (Two different wreckers had one).
I did the clutch and changed the fluids at the same time. Took me about 2 days in my driveway with hand tools. $1500 for a transmission, clutch, service manual CD, and fluids really isn't that bad when you think about what a shop would charge.
Now I have my old transmission I can rebuild if I have future problems. The linkage assembly was about $400-500 from chrysler last time I checked.
Given how common these problems are (and that I had the same problem even at a low mileage), I don't see the point in spending $2k to end up with the same problem. Ah well, maybe playing the guarantee game would work, but I suspect I'd hear "It's a use transmission, it's got a bit of wear, don't worry about it", and find out 2 years later that it's toast just like my first one. I like the idea of Brandy-New-Parts.
