Alright guys, I live in an Emissions-Required area, and I've already personally replaced the EGR valve, with a CEL still glowing in my face... :evil:

Now the Stealership is telling me that the FCV is bad, and THAT is what is causing the CEL, even though they originally told me it was the EGR and wanted $1100 to replace it (after tax).

Now they want $970 for the FCV and another $825 for the glow plugs.

I'm pretty handy with a wrench, but I don't have the computer to reprogram for a 5v glow plug vs. a 7v one (Yet, might be a future item).

So right now I'm looking at ~$1800 from the stealership, or doing it myself. I tend to lean towards doing it myself, if these parts are available.

I would really appreciate some help, as good old :google: really isn't helping me with finding parts, etc.

I probably need to do a tune, and I've been reading about the boost hoses etc. so I realize now that there's something else in my immediate future with approximately 112k miles on my KJ.

Thoughts?

Do some research here before you go spending that kind of money at a dealers. The new Etecno glow plugs are straight drop in replacements and do not require a voltage change, and a set will cost you way less than what Jeep are asking. The FCV is available online for less than half what you were quoted. There is also a company that will remanufacture your FCV and replace the plastic gears with metal ones (problem is you have to send your unit to them). SO shop around, and use the search function here to find the detail of what you need.

Of course you could save a lot of money and just do the SEGR and fix this problem forever.
There is plenty of info and lots of people that have done it.
Mine now has over 100K miles on it and is still working just fine in this nice cool 114 degree heat in Phoenix.....

A tune will fix the P1140 code you have for the FCV, and eliminate EGR issues as well. We can set up the tune for 7 volt or 5 volt glow plugs. The dealer is a more costly option and they can not give you better performance or fuel economy.

Hexus - all good advise but one question from me. At 112 miles I hope your timing belt has been changed out; if not that should be #1 on the list of things to do.

The new 7v glow plugs (metalic) can be purchased from
dieselglowplug.com
part# - Etecno GX3123 7v glow plug.

If you order all four, the cost is $178 delivered from Italy.

It's a pain to replace #3 as you have to remove the inlet tube, but with my fat fingers took about a full Saturday with some refreshments thrown in.

Thanks Allen for the info on the plugs, their website only shows euro's so I'll have to call them or email.

I also emailed GDE about a SEGR or possible tune to rectify the EGR issues.

I'm still looking at about $650 plus some time but that's a lot better than $2000.

Timing belt really that serious of a concern at 112k? I've read where people have replaced them at 25K etc. but I'm having no issues with it, is there a way to inspect it for problems? I've also seen where people have replaced them at 185k miles and saw no visible wear, is it a luck-of-the-draw type thing or a known issue?

The timing belt is a $100 part. Replacing idlers, tensioner, and water pump are generally optional if the current ones are in good shape and you want to save a little money. A lot of the breaks occur in the 120k range, so you're pretty much gambling. If it breaks, you are going to be out about $700 for new rockers and you'll need to pull the head to fix it.

I replaced my glow plugs recently too. It wasn't too bad. Remove the alternator, intake elbow, and fuel filter head and you'll have pretty good access. I think #4 was the hardest mostly because it's hard to see. I was fortunate that mine came out easy and the threads were clean. I already had the 5v plugs on hand because I bought them before the Ecternos were available. I had GDE do the flash for them. I already have a tune from them and as many of us would attest, they are a good outfit to work with.

I have my GDE tune all set for 5V installation. It won't do any harm. GDE tune is great.

Don't skip on the timing belt.

GDE does a tune to modify the EGR issues, They use the EGR to act as a blow off on full throtle to full off, or something to that effect. The SEGR is a kit put together by a group of guys here that totally disables the EGR and does not send a CEL. I can't remember the guys name, but others here would know. It works well.

If your going to do the timing belt (highly recomended) consider replacing the water pump, tensioner, idlers etc. your already in there. In my case, I lost the water pump at 80K and did everything then. The hardest part is getting the fan and shroud in and out. otherwise just follow the guide in the tech section. I was really nervous myself then I had no choice but to do it. Was not that bad. just follow the directions and the group will be here to answer any questions.

100k is the recommended change interval for the timing belt. The cost of the replacement parts/labor for the timing belt is drastically less than the cost of parts/labor to replace everthing that can and will break if your timing belt fails prior to your decision of when it "needs" changed. I will opt for replacement slightly prior to 100k.

And after a chat with Sir Sam mine is getting replaced at ca. 50,000 miles; based on my annual miles driven that's going to be somewhere around 8 vehicle years and I just don't feel like trusting a timing belt to go an additional 8 years to get to 100,000 miles. Not when I have all the Miller tools, know how to do it (thanks geordi), and the silly belt (Gates version) is all of $75 from Amazon. I figure $75 and a morning's work is cheap insurance.

Now if I drove a more normal 12,000 miles or more a year I'd do the job based on mileage.

Alright, timing belt is now on my to do list. Worried more about getting plates first with the EGR issue, then I'll do the plugs, then probably August I'll do the timing belt, water pump, etc.

You guys recommend the TCM tune as well as the GDE ECU tune?

Just thinking down the road. I'm glad my wife loves Jeeps, too bad I had to get rid if my TJ when the kids came along...

I will have another soon though...

For what it's worth:
1. if your emissions issue (aka CEL light on) needs to be handled like "right now" because of registration or inspection schedule then your first priority may be to get the taken care of. So the question becomes what codes do you actually have that are causing the CEL. If the emissions related codes will go away with a GDE tune (confirm that with Keith based on actual codes) then don't waste a penny on an FCV or EGR ritght now (by the way the latter can be cleaned and restored to service) instead spend the money with GDE now. If you want to block off your EGR later (IMHO not worth the effort with the tune) than do that later. If there are glow plug failure codes a set of 4 Etecno 7v plugs runs about $180 delivered and, as noted, they are a drop in replacement and an easy DIY job just be gentle on removal so as to not break a tip (it can be done but does require a bit of a whack). Why the stealer wants $850 for glow plugs is beyond me IIRC list price for 4 plugs and the controller is like $200 and labor should be no more than 2 hrs to swap the plugs and reporgram the ECU for a total charge inclu shop fees and tax more on the order of $500 tops.
2. on the other hand if the CEL emissions issue is not a "right now" issue and glow plugs are not needed now (it is after all summer assuming you are not way north) then I'd do the timing belt first. I won't get into the debate about do the water pump with the 1st TB vs 2n or routinely replace the idlers and such but will note that if money is an issue if things are solid you can get away with just the belt. If you want to go all the way ID Parts has a decent price on a timing belt pkg, GDE rents the tools, and Sir Sam has a nice trick posted that cuts the water pump replacement time way down.

I like the TCM tune as does stoutdog but your priority should be the ECU tune and timing belt. The TCM tune is nice and makes shift points more like the pre-F-37 but to the extent it provides an efficiency benefit it's around town as once you are in full cruise/locked up the TCM tune doesn't "do" much although it may hold lockup a bit better on grades and if you really want to drive at 53 mph for maximum efficiency then you need the TCM tune.
