I've owned my CRD for 3 years and have never seen mileage this good. This was on a 200 mile trip and the AC was on. Best before this was 27. I had to take a picture. Did the planets align correctly? I haven't changed anything lately.

Naw, that is what I usually see on the highway, and I *always* have my AC running, hwy speeds of 75 or so. The thing you have to remember is that the EVIC is anywhere from 3-5mpg optimistic. Calculated mileage on mine by filling right to the lip with no foam, I get 26-27mpg usually, so about 4mpg less than what the EVIC says.

Agreed with Geordi. 27mpg is about the peak that you can get from this vehicle. Anyone that tells you that they are getting 30+ is either being economical with the truth, over optimistic, or making an error in their calculations.

My average consumption at this time of year for my driving pattern (70% Hwy:30% 55mph rural roads) is 25mpg when corrected for odometer error.

I beg to differ with dirtmover at least in part. All my mpg calculations are hand done, simply math, based on GPS corrected mileage.

I reported on the resullts of a 2000+ mile trip right after getting the GDE EcoTune some time ago on the GDE site "Just returned from a round trip to Baltimore, MD with essentially all the driving on Interstate or US highways except for passing through small towns in SE Georgia on US 82 and 84. Hand calculated mpg (odometer reading corrected to match GPS and with all fill-ups showing clear unfoamed fuel at the top of the filler neck) ranges from a low of 29.7 (some rain and consistent headwinds - PS OEM tstat probably failed during this section of the drive also. I'll also note that my spouse drove this and only this leg of the trip for what that is or is not worth) to a high of 33.9 (61-62 mph or 1,800 rpm with/without AC) with a whole trip average of 32 even. This is my second KJ diesel, the first having come out second best when I stopped for the red light and the dump truck behind me did not, and both that KJ and this one (both 2005s) typically got 28 or a bit less mpg in similar driving situations. Hence I am seeing a net overall mpg improvement with the GDE tune of 10-20% depending on speed, wind, ac, road condition, etc." Now I will agree that I cannot control for pump error but would argue that in 2000+ miles pump error is a minimal factor.

I will agree that 27-28mpg is about right for a stock CRD without the GDE tune (I saw 30mpg once but cannot comment on the accuracy of the relevant tank fills which could easily throw a 1 tank fill calculation off if one does not fill to the absolute top consistently). Post GDE EcoTune it's a different story. Don't ask me just yet on how I'm doing with the Stage II turbo and GDE turbo tune.

With the GDE ECO tune, I have got close to 29MPG hand calulated in the summer. You can see in my signature my life time is 26.6MPG (winter ~25MPG) and towing will drop it. I have recorded every tank (see the below latest), all my driving is at 70-75MPH, tires at 40PSI

Date Miles Gal MPG Price %city
7/3/12 531.3 18.61 28.5 3.490 5%
6/26/12 494.4 18.34 27.0 3.499 10%
6/8/12 498.6 18.64 26.8 3.649 15%
5/29/12 453.7 18.60 24.4 3.789 0% Towing the boat for full tank
5/25/12 372.3 13.57 27.4 3.799 20%
5/18/12 472.5 16.86 28.0 3.959 15%
5/10/12 490.8 17.26 28.4 3.959 10%
5/2/12 447.3 17.91 25.0 3.999 10% Towing large trees
4/20/12 531.5 18.88 28.2 3.999 10%
4/9/12 529.2 20.26 26.1 4.059 20%

I could see 31MPG if I did a long trip, we use the Jetta for those (45+MPG)

For sure a tune can help with fuel economy, but speed is still the critical factor. If one drives at 60 mph then 30+ mpg is feasible (with tune). I drive around 80 mph and never get above 27mpg.

I would agree and add headwinds, we do drive a brick, and a fully working thermostat (bad one cost me 2 mpg on hwy).

I'm pretty impressed especially the 22mpg with a fully loaded CRD pulling a fully loaded 5x8 uhaul from Tempe, AZ to Tally, FL. Try that with you high mpg econo car.

in My 05 with GDE turbo and not driving faster then 60mph I have gotten 33 mpg on a full tank refill

99% hwy on texas flat land and that is hand calculated , but it is to much fun to drive that slow all the time :)

it had 35 mpg on the evic

I have never seen that on the 06 which does not have a tune yet

GDE eco tune currently showing an average of 35.7 on the EVIC.
That is a mix of city and highway driving.

I couldn't be happier.

I just spent a month and a half driving around the southwest. Here is a pic I took of my fuel gauge at half tank. There are highway miles driven at 58mph.

The ending tank was good for 735 miles. It worked out to just over 37mpg.

Wow CRD Joe, I've only got that far on a full tank. But I can never seem to drive that slow. Can't go under the speed limit on the interstate. Plus a always seem to tow the boat or a trailer a few times on each tank.

Anything else helping your MPG?

I disagree. My CRD doesn't even have an EVIC, all my mileage is hand calculated using odo readings and fuel carefully added to all liquid clear to the brim. My tires are 235/70's, with a rolling diameter just a hair larger than stock.

Before I got my GDE ecotune last year, I had seen several tankfuls just over 30 mpg. The first tankful after the ecotune was 34.7, and I've seen several others since then between 30 and 34. All of these were on trips of 300+ miles, on the highway, mostly 60-65 mph by the speedo. And most with the AC on, although the 34.7 was with AC off.

And for what it worth, a calculator was used by this college math minor.

I also have gotten 32 MPG consistently on 75-77 MPH highway trips up to the airport in Denver. I get about 22-24 averaged per tank with mostly city type driving. No EVIC all hand calculations with GPS mileage. On a side note my Odometer is accurate when checked against GPS to less than a half mile per 200 miles and its been a while since I checked it but my speedo was pretty accurate too when compared to GPS speedo. All checked against a Clarion NZ501 in dash GPS head unit.
