I live in MA, also drive a 2000 Jeta TDI.
The glow plugs on the Jetta always worked fine, but we ended up getting an after market coolant warmer.

I was wondering what the CRD is like in very cold weather?
Also is there any after market warmers similar to the TDI one?

Found this in another thread, in case anyone else was wondering the same thing.
Wondering if anyone ever installed one and had pictures/tips :)

When I bought my CRD I lived in Cleveland less than a mile from Lake Erie. Trust me we had wind chills of -50 and we had feet of snow at a time. I never once had an issue getting the engine to start when using the stock block heater that came with the CRD. I wouldn't waste the money unless you live in the frozen tundra of the further north.

CRD has a block heater. Just have to uncoil the wire.

Pop the engine cover off. You will most likely find it bundled and zip tied somewhere on the drivers side near the dipstick tube if I recall.

Typically zip tied from the factory in a wad to the oil dipstick tube. If the insulation is shot from a bunch of years of being heated in a wad a new one is like $25 at the dealer and pretty easy to replace with one person up top feeding wire and one person underneath disconnecting/reconnecting, no need to remove OEM front skid.

Works great. If you are in a cold area get a timer and set to come on a couple of hours before you need to crank up.

I only use my stock engine heater when its below 20 F outside and did it when the thermostat was broke. it has started up fine at 15F but warms up faster when plugged in when its that cold.

Look for my thread on adding a tranny cooler. You will see I have mine poking through the grill.

I unwrapped mine shortly after I bought my 2005 CRD new, and fed the cord up past the battery so that in cold weather, I can feed it out over the headlight so I don't even have to open the hood to plug in.

That said, it doesn't usually get all that cold here in the winter, certainly not as cold as Mass. Since I've never really needed it, I've only used it about twice, both mostly to check and make sure it works (it does). Even without it, I've never had any trouble starting up cold in temperatures down to around zero, or maybe a degree or two lower.

The glow plugs do demand a little more time before you try to crank it in those temperatures, of course. But it fires right up. One of my tests was on a morning when the temp was supposed to get down to zero. I put the block heater on a timer to come on about 2 hours before I planned to start it, and you'da thunk it was a summer day from the glow plug time and time-to-fire while cranking.
