When I put the Jeep in reverse and begin to back up, the Jeep ('04 KJ V6 Auto 4WD) kind of wobbles until it gets up to 5 or 10 mph. It is especially prevalent going backwards uphill.

This has been going on for 2-3 months. In the past month I've also noticed the Jeep shifting a lot rougher. I checked the trans fluid and it needs to be changed (it is a light orange color, not deep red or pink).

I don't know if these two things are related, but I'll be changing the fluid very soon. However, I'd like to know if anyone has any suggestions on what to look for about the reverse wobbling while I'm under the Jeep for the fluid/filter change. Or if the wobble could be just be slipping due to old fluid.

Any and all suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks,
Jordan

Not ignoring you, just have read this post about 10 times now and don't for the life of me understand what your talking about.

Don't know what you mean by "wobbles in reverse going up hill". I associate the word wobble with how an egg rolls. Not sure how that translates to a transmission issue.

I am not sure about wobble, but the 42RLE transmission is notorious for having a shudder in reverse.

I haven't figured out why you're going 5-10 mph in reverse
Don't think I've ever had to back up more than 20-30 feet at most....

If its shuddering in R then that's 'normal' for the 42rle. Mine has always done that.

From what I've read, the color of the fluid doesn't tell you the condition of the fluid. Personally I like for my fluid to stay bright red and smell like ATF+ all the time though.

Thanks for the replies. I guess one man's "wobble" is another's "shudder." But, semantics aside, I don't think it is anything to worry about. I've been searching KJ forums for a while and didn't find too much on it. However, in the past few days I found a few people saying their TJ's with the 42RE had this problem as well. From what they, and Jeepjeepster, say it is just something that happens. I was just worried it was something really bad as I've never had that happen in any other vehicle.

Shudder in reverse on a hill, I have had on many occasions, more gas... less shudder....
