I dropped my Jeep off today at the local dealership for the big timing belt change. (I feel like a quitter for not doing it myself, but I want the 12 month 12k mile warranty) I have been waiting to change the trans fluid until I could afford the Euro torque converter, and before I realized it I was at 110k miles. I'VE NEVER HAD IT CHANGED unless you count the time my transmission went in for the f-37 and a little later the TCU blew out. The dealership told me today that he would rather just drain the pan and change the filters as he could stir up sludge. Does this sound correct? He said it's 50/50 that they could destroy the transmission.

Have I trashed this trans forever, or can I change the fluid more frequently to get to a point where I can perform a full flush? Once I change out the torque converter I wonder if I can fully flush then since the components need to be taken apart anyway. Anyone have a way to weigh in on this?

FYI: For the belt, water pump, pulleys, tensioner, gaskets/seals, trans drain, and two filters I'm looking at $2180. I was going to have the serp belt, pulleys, tensioner, and alternator pulley changed too, but it was going to get close to another $500. His comment was "man these parts are real expensive."

I'll change them out myself as it should be an easier job.

As long as you have not beat the trans to death(slipping and excessive heat, any engine over heating) you will be just fine as long as no chemical cleaners are used in the flush.

Ok thanks for that response. The vehicle has been treated pretty gently. Most of my miles are highway, with no towing and no off-road.

And, as tjkj2002 said in another post, if its not a 'power flush'. Make sure their flush machine just uses the pressure made by the trans itself.

Try and see if the dealership will let you supply the parts for the timing belt job. You can get the same Mopar parts online significantly cheaper. That could save you some cash.

No such thing as a power flush or reverse flush for a trans,it would either blow the machine or the trans in a few seconds everytime.

We have 2 BG trans machines. One has a pump to help push fluid through, the other uses only the trans pressure. I've also used a red machine, I think it was a Wynns, that had it's own pump.

Yes some machines have there own pump and flows at the same exact rate as what the trans is pumping.
