I got a check engine light the other day, then a few hours later the trans temp also came on. I got the ce codes from Advanced and there were 3 codes, 2 of which were transmission related. So I took it to the best shop I know of and had them check it out. I told them I just wanted it flushed, filter changed, etc. They called and told me a whole bunch of stuff but the bottom line was that the transmission is going to fail soon. They couldn't say when but that changing the fluids and filter might actually speed up the process. They also quoted me $2500 to rebuild it. I’m not about to part with my Libby and look at this as a potential chance for an upgrade but $2500 is a decent amount of cash so I thought I'd ask the experts. So here is my question. Where should I go with this? What options if any can I pursue to upgrade my transmission since it needs a total rebuild anyway? TIA

$2500 for that job on that trans and in a KJ is about the norm, about middle of the road for price wise from what I've seen.Make sure they only put in ATF+4 and get the empty bottles as proof.

What were the codes? That will tell us a lot more.

Most times a flush is overkill, unless you cooked you're fluid. Pan drop, fluid and filter shouldn't hurt anything. If needed, Lucas Transmission Fix can buy time on a weakened transmission, just make sure you are preparing for its death.

I literally just found this out today so my first step in preparing for its death was this post. :) The Jeep is actually still at the shop and I'll probably just call soon and have them start to rebuild it. The codes are below.

P1775
Solenoid Latched in Torque Conv. Clutch Position

P0700
Transmission Control System (Malfunction Indicator Lamp)

That just sounds like a shift solenoid has bad electrical connection, clogged or went bad. IIRC the solenoid can be replaced without even dropping the pan on the 42RLE. Based on what I've seen of other Chrysler transmissions about a $200 part.

Interesting, thanks for the responses. The ce light actually went off after about 2 days.

That P0700 code is a very general code for a transmission fault - see if the shop can give you the underlying codes in addition to the 0700. There should be a code or two that relate to the specific problem - if they relate to the clutch packs then the death is not far away. If there is no other codes then maybe you have good fortune on your side.
