Does anyone have any information on Rotella vs Mobile 1 vs Amzoil vs Valvoline in the area of fuel economy? Please any Amzoil reps don't bombard me with a company sales line, not interested in that. I am interested if there is anybody out there who keeps track of MPG and can document if a particular oil has made any consistent difference.

I've used Rotella and Mobil 1 in my CRD and kept detailed logs since day 1 same as I've done for every vehicle I've ever owned. Frankly in over 40 years of driving I've never seen any real world difference. Translation - in real world driving there are just too many variables to notice an mpg change that might relate to the use of any particular brand or type (dino or synthetic) or weight of oil.

Now on a test jig in the lab under tightly controlled conditions I suspect a difference can be measured and I suspect car manufactures go to great lengths to measure that difference to meet fleet mpg requirements.

If one really wanted to improve mpg on the CRD, beyond what the GDE tunes can do, wasting time on oils is IMHO silly. What needs to happen is for someone to figure out a way to dump at least 500 lbs of dead weight off this excessively heavy vehicle. Not much one can do about the aerodynamics of the "brick" shape. It's only thanks to diesel engine efficiency that we can get 30 or so mpg on the hwy.
