Chukhloma Full On is an approximately week-long expedition trip to remotest depths of Central Russia.
Events of last decades put whole districts out of highway-connected civilization, permanently conserving true Russian spirit in those wild enclaves. It's impossible to visit those places with guide or book a tour there. Only hikers and groups of adventurous bikers wander into old chambers and temples from time to time.
Chukhloma is a Russian town (village before 1778), capital of Chuklomskoy district in Kostroma region.
Exact time and even place of foundation in unknown. There are evidences that Chukhloma existed in 10th century, but on the north shore of Chukhloma lake instead of south shore where it's located now. Avraamiev Gorodetskiy abbey was founded on north shore later. Official date of Chukhloma foundation on the south shore is 1381. Distant from transit routes Chukhloma have never been a trading city. It's population lived mostly from crafts and petty trades. Many people were fishermen and farmers. Lack of pasturable lands made it hard to live from cattle and develop butter- and cheese-making. The only venture on this land was brewery of tax farmer Nelidov, documented in 1844.
Nowadays, Chukhloma district becomes deserted.
Young people leave for big cities and older population pass away. It leaves big thinly populated areas, with deserted villages and farms, churches without priests or flock, graveyards who will never have visitors with flowers to leave on a grave. With unique northern nature, with forests, swamps, shallow rivers and lakes.
Landscape of Russian north is not rich of colors.
Green dominates all others. Nature strikes with it's soundness. Mighty pines and spruces that survive harsh winter. Thin and short birches... There are a lot of moss on the "ground floor" of the forest, where even scant rays of light cannot reach. When you step on this wet green sponge you can sink ankle deep. Everything is covered with moss: tree roots, stumps and fallen stems.
Wide meadows of Chukhloma district are covered with juicy grass raised on wet ground. Shores of small rivers overgrow with different kinds of fern, sometimes 3 meters high.
I enjoy coming to this places. I enjoy silence, calmness and soundness of nature. Cell phones don't work here. There are no traffic noises. Because there is no traffic, no cellphone transmitters.
There is no civilization, and with every year there are less and less reminders of civilization. Wooden houses, chambers and temples, tilted from time and absence of residents. Soon, in 5-6 years there will be nothing: only forests and meadows. And only wind will break the silence of nature.
