I've read some old threads, but have not found a pic of a Yakima rack on stock rails. I've had a Yak rack for years, I would just like to see one mounted before I pop $160 for the "rail grab towers."

I want to go with a rocket box and kayak mount. Will probably use the old steel head mounts for bikes.

Would love to see a pic of your Yak, especially with rail grab towers.

TIA
TJ

I second this request.

I've got one and will try to take pics today. Seems to work well. The towers that attach to the rails don't have a precise molded fit, but I think that is because the towers are designed to fit multiple applications. Just snug them up properly and you shouldn't have a problem. I carry two mountain bikes on mine.

I'll snap a close-up a bit later, but here's a shot with the yak's, a rocket-box, and the "gutter-style" bike mounts on the far side:

Ok, here they are. Didn't have my bike rails on though.

The towers don't look like they clamp on that securely, but they do.

Yep, the "foot" design is a little older (or newer?) on mine, but the clearances are the same as what I have.

Thanks for the info. I guess I didn't subscribe to the thread so only just saw the pics today.

The towers are low enough they shouldn't be a problem. I talked to a local forum member and he had trouble with wind noise. I've always used a faring and it almost eliminates the howl of the wild.

Overall height of the mounts, crossbars, and rocket box looks like it will fit in my carport. The box will probably stay on top summer and winter.

Guess I'll have towers and rocket box shipped to closest REI store.

thanks again

I put mine on about a month after getting the CRD in 2006 and haven't worried about the noise. Can I hear it? Sure, a little, but less than the 2.8T

BTW, you're going to be pleasantly surprised when you take your first long trip with the rocket box. At speeds ~70 mph, aerodynamic impact is negligible and I've actually gotten slightly BETTER mileage than with bare racks on the same style driving. The box also adds little to no noise over the racks themselves.

Thanks (times 2) for the replies. I've been 'waiting' to move on this since I first posted. I bought the "Yakima rail grabber" mounts months ago (about $165 retail).

I then got confused about whether a Rocketbox 11 or 16 would fit. I would still to mount a (narrow) Rocket Box 16, but have read reviews that the tailgate can't be opened on a '05-'06 Liberty with the 'long skinny boxes.'

My idea is to mount a narrow (snowboard appropriate) box (Yakima 11, and hopefully 16) that will leave room on a 48 in crossbar for a couple older 'steel-head' (gutter mount) bike racks.

I see the 11 and 16 Rocket boxes are obsolete (I think because of the tailgate clearance problem). . . but there is a local supplier who has them in stock for a handsome discount.

TIA for any experience or recommendations for the '05-'06 Liberty.
