The recent fumoto valve thread got me thinking about protecting the bottom of my jeep better as I've been tooling down some little two-tracks this weekend. Does the standard mopar transmission skid plate fit okay with the larger M1-301 oil filter? Is there another brand I should consider?

The transmission skid plate doesn't protect the oil filter very well. I welded a wing on the skid plate that extends it out to the side and kicks up on the side of the filter, this way nothing can hit the filter from the bottom or come in from the side angle. I used 3mm checkerplate and triangulated it with side pieces so it won't bend if dropped on a rock.

Yes, the M1-301 fits just fine with the Mopar skid. Plenty of room to change the filter without removing the skid. The downside to the Mopar skid, as Glend mentions, is that it doesn't completely protect the filter.

Factory skids aren't engineered to take hits. One member's factory skid collapsed and broke the oil filter off. I drive on the rock as though I don't really have a skid. . . because I really don't.
