Hey fellas, i got a question for ya. I'll be going off to college at this end of this comming summer, and unfortunately i won't be able to take my Jeep with me  . I was wondering what the best method for storage is. My guess would be in the garage (if i can clear some room) under a car cover, and up on some jack stands. Does that sound right, the garage and car cover to protect from the elements and the jack stands to prolong the springs and keep the tires from flat-spotting/dry-rotting... If not, let me know what the best way to keep her fresh for 10 months is. I will sacrifice and let my mom drive it from time to time if need be, but i was hoping to be able to take it off the road so that we can take it off insurance to save some money. Any advice/opinions are appreciated.

Thanks,
-Savage-

I'll babysit her for ya.

But seriously... I would *think* that if it is going to sit for a very long period of time then you may want to look at draining the fluids and gas.

well, taking it off insurance is risky, even if you have it stored in the garage, i'm not totally sure if the homeowner's insurance would cover it if something that happened to the house then damaged your ride. But letting mom at least drive it around the block to warm it up and keep the fluids from settling wouldn't be that bad of an idea I would think. But if you got the garage space to fit it and store it up on jacks or what not could be fine too, though i think over-extending the shocks for sometime might cause damage I would think. Anywho, there is my 2 cents. Good luck at college, i'm about to get out soon in a year but it's been a lot of fun too, even though the hw sux.

You should be able to get limited mileage insurance that will save you a lot and cover storage and the ocassional warm up ride. If you are going to put it on jack stands you should support it under the suspension so the shocks are not extended. I would also find some non-alcohol gas for the last tank before storage, check your local collectors car club, they usually maintain a list of stations that have non-alcohol gas.

I used to be in the insurance buisiness. You can get insurace on it for being in storage. You will have to send them some information such as location, odometer reading etc. I know a lot of times people do drain the fluids etc. But the above recommendation of calling a classic car club is a great idea.

I would not drian the fluids, stupid idea IMO. I do not see why it would hurt the shocks to be fully extended. Would be no different than taking them off the jeep and laying them on the ground? I would put jack-stands under the rear axle and where the jack goes on the front. I would run the gas down to E(if the mother is not driving it) and put fuel stabilizer in it. Be sure to unhook the battery also, if the mother isnt driving it.

Ohh, why cant you take the jeep? Are you going to Harvard University or something??

Parking is a pain in Cambridge, but not impossible. I agree though, as nice as it is having a car, it's just a pain having it while in college, especially if the place you're going has good public transportation or if everything is walkable/bikable (like it is in Boston/Cambridge, for example). You've got plenty of other things to worry about in college, the last thing you need to deal with is having to get up at 6am to move your car from one place to another to avoid parking bans, illegal spots, etc. Such a pain. But you do get the immediate cool-guy factor when you're the only one with wheels 8)

No jack stands - dangerous and unneeded. No draining the fluids - unneeded.

I would put some Stabil in the tank, store it full of fuel, and hook up a battery tender to the battery. Maybe put some plywood between the tires and concrete, and use a car cover. That's all.

Look up references on "Winterizing" motorcycles for some good info.

Well, first post here at least. I'm theowner of a brand new '06 Limited, 3.7L (Dark Khaki when clean, now colored "pollen").

I've posted all of 9 or 10 times at KJ Country though, including my installation of the Jeep iPod adapter for the RBQ 6-disc changer.

Yea, I know all to well about the pollen. We just got a good rain this morning and it washed mine off, looks like I just washed it now!

read about storage tips for cars and bikes.

Fuel stabilizer is good. Tank full. Tires off is good. As I recall, from my motorcycle days, you'll want to leave oil in, but change it before and after storing it.

Tape a zip lock bag (HD Freezer type) over the exhaust, and cover and close off the intake area. I had carbs (not EFI) so I used to remove them entirely and seal up the intakes.

Also, cover ALL electrical areas in WD-40. (the WD stands for WATER DISPLACEMENT). Water and moisture are NOT good for autos for long periods of time. MAKE SURE your garage is dry. If there's a dampness or humidity issue, put a dehumidifier in the garage or you'll suffer electrical issues over time.

Clean and wax EVERYTHING before storage.

There are millions of other tips. The longer you store it for, and the more valuable it is, the more things you should do.

And last, call your insurance agent to see how best to handle your coverage. Some homeowner's policies include and some specifically exclude stored vehicles. At the very least, you can drop collision during that time. that is, assuming you don't have a lein on the title, otherwise, you have to maintain full coverage regardless.

But won't you want to drive it during school breaks? It might be a whole lot easier to just let mom take it for a LONG drive once per month. (short drives are worse than no drives at all, BTW. Again, that moisture thing.)

well somebody mentioned to me that i could actually turn on and off my insurance from month to month, so i would probably be able to work something out so that i can drive it when i come home, or if not, as someone mentioned earlier i could go for a low mileage insureance or something.

Maybe you should skip college and use the money to buy goodies for the KJ. When you get it rigged out you can just bum around and go wheeling.

My idea is to skip college and go wheeling. With the money saved you could really rig out your KJ.

It would also help to pull all the spark plugs and pour about a table spoon of marvel mystery oil or any good heavy motor oil(20-50wt) and replace plugs, don't use to much or you could hydrolook your engine. This prevents your piston rings from seizing to the cylinder walls, and makes for a better start up after done storing.I,ve stored my KJ for 2 years(1 year at a time with 8 months in between)and I placed my KJ on jackstands but only a few inches to take the wieght of the springs and tires but does not sit at full extension for long periods of time.

My 86 bronco is Like 45 dollars a year. it is listed as a limited mileage vehicle with State Farm . I have started it up and moved it at least once a month unless my son goes wheeling. Its the backup if we mess up the jeeps or need to have one worked on.

Really? State Farm offers limited use policies now? Good to know! Does the vehicle need to be a certain age or just limited in mileage per year traveled?

put fuel stabilizer... i would fill the tank to op to avoid condensation., don't drain fluid untill you come back to use it.let it rest on tires, that;s why you have s suspension, but your tires might go bad like mine. .I let mine rest for 9 months, but it was in very north upstate NY and all tires went cracked and bumpy so I got new BFG, and disconect battery.

get ins for Storage, basically no collision, but keep comprehensive and lower your usage.
