Ok so I was putting in my K&N the other day and noticed this Shield. Does this actually serve a purpose? I would think more air could get in that scoop if that thing wasn't blocking most of it. Is it used for redirection of air from the Grill? Maybe I don't know.
Now this may have already been covered but I'm a noob and couldn't find anything on it.

It is meant to deflect the water from your intake when fording rivers.

I don't buy that. That much water in the area would easily maneuver around that. I think it's for deflection of water at higher speeds, otherwise it'd have to be much larger. I'm thinking rain water deflection or splash deflection from hitting smaller bodies of water like streams/ponds.

I'd say it does both.

It is for deflecting water.

If you look at the setup of the air intake the air comes from the side of the hood. The air horn is blocked off by that sheild and by the rubber stripping that forms the seal.

I took that off of mine and haven't had any problems. I replaced my air intake with a cheap intake off of e-bay and then used a K&N 6x9 as the filter. Much cheaper then the FIPK.
