update so far - (been on hols - great relax) long long crank time to start engine , eventually starts and runs and revs fine . switch it off try to re start - long long crank time then starts . just replaced crank sensor - not changed anything .
Do you think it could be the fuel pressure regulator or fuel pressure sensor. if so is there a guide to changing the pressure regulator - in the manual it just describes it .
any help much appreciated dave p

next update - its had a crank sensor - fuel pressure solenoid (at back of pump ) fuel rail pressure sensor - still the same . Started reading on this forum again - test the spill back quantity - easy test so why not - here are the results !!
injector no 1 - 40 ml per min
no 2 11 ml
no 3 120 ml
no 4 7 ml
is it possible to refurb - as ive read somewhere that new ones have to have have the codes flashed to the ecu - by the way i really hope this is the problem -
thanks again - dave p

You clearly should not have that range of results but I don't offhand know what the acceptable amounts should be; others might or you might find information in the Factory Service Manual that can be downloaded via Sir Sam's NOOB site.

Yes injectors can be rebuilt and reinstalled without messing with recoding the ECU as far as I know but of course you would have to reinstall the rebuilt injectors in the same locations from which they were removed. I don't have any suggestions as the where to get the work done in the UK but I'm sure any good diesel shop could tell you.

i sent the two offending injectors for a refurb - talking to the man who did this he said that the valves inside were worn out and almost certainly the problem. i fitted them - after getting the air out it starts immediately (just like it used to) test drove around the field no stops . Can you feel a but coming on - - - BUT it starts and runs for 1 second then stops ,if you re try or give it some gas as you crank it will go - but you can feel it hesitate at the 1 second mark . i tried the 2nd set of keys thinking that the key fob battery may be flat - exactly the same.
i suspect that this problem has nothing to do with the original problem - but was caused by long cranking and running the battery down - i have read somewhere that this is the skim code thing - stopping the engine straight away because it is not a valid key. Can you please advise on what course of action for this problem . PS the test in the field (wet and steep) the grip was better than the landrover !!! BFGs on jeep
thanks again dave p

There should be round red light in the lower left of the dash cluster. If it thinks the skim in your key is not right it will flash and stop the motor from running after a second or two. Is your red light flashing when the motor cuts out?

The Export models have a yellow "key" symbol with a stripe through it on the LH side of the console for the SKIS system.

This light should briefly light up when ignition is turned ON and should go out straight away.
If the light "blinks" at you it means the ECU is not happy with the code sent to it by the SKIM module sitting below the ignition slot and this will cause the engine to cut off after about three seconds of running.

If this "key" light stays ON permanently. It will mean your engine will not start at all and is because the ECU recognised the SKIM code but did not get confirmation back from the ASD relay that it, the ASD relay, energized properly.

Try swapping the ASD relay out with another identical one next to it in the relay box under the hood or "bonnet" as we call it with the Export models. :D

on this jeep - its a yellow key with a line thro . when ignition is turned on everything is lit key included - if you wait a few secs it goes out . crank the engine - it starts every time - but stops sometimes after a second or two or just hesitates as if to stop but doesnt - then sometimes it starts fine no hesitation .
i swapped the relays - no difference . The jeep has been stood for a few months now - and the fuel system been in bits - do you think run it a while and see what happens ?? - and take it from there - or do you have any ideas on what it may be ?
any help much appreciated Dave P PS this forum has been the key to fixing the jeep - thanks again

Sounds like there is no issue then with your SKIM system.

Probably have air/dirt in the fuel system...prime the filter and try take the Jeep on a long hard run to get the cobwebs out. :)
