Hi all new to Lost Jeeps and first time jeep owner as of yesterday...05 liberty renegade. Anyways, i have a question for you all. The factory rock rails are rusty in certain areas. Has anyone ever used like bed liner to repaint them, or do you have any other suggestions. The jeep is spotless other than that and it really bugs me and i wanna get it taken care of, but do it right so it will last. So please any ideas will help.
Thanks!

If you want to keep them on, just sand them down and paint them with hammertone paint
Much easier to touch up that anything else and last a long time

what is the benefit of hammered paint? i was under the impression that its just a "hammered" finish? and would the rustoleum brand work?

I've got an '05 renegade as well and used duplicolor bedliner on my rock rails and roof rails. Rock rails were rusting near the drainage hole and one of the roof rails was chipping badly. I used some aircraft paint remover to strip all 4 rails, scuffed them up a bit with sandpaper, and gave them 4 coats of bedliner. They look much, much better now. No problems whatsoever with fading, cracking, chipping, etc. Well worth the ~$10 and hour or so that it cost to do.

Problem with bedliner is its harder to "touchup" than paint when they get scratched etc on rocks.
Of course if they never get used as they should then no worries
Same as powdercoating them, waste of money since as soon as one scratch its over

Why do you think it's so difficult to touch up? Just aim and spray, or if you're no good with a rattle can, you can always use a brush. No different than touching up paint IMO. Plus it's more durable than paint so touch-ups aren't needed nearly as often.

To each his own, though.

Give me paint
sorry bedliner has its place but not on rockrails
no way its more durable than paint when used from a spray can
I've seen both in action
but then like you said to each his own

Real bedliner has to be professionally sprayed, expect about $100+ for each touchup.

Rattle can paint is much easier to maintain on rockrails and is far cheaper and can be done by you.

:ROTFL:
But spray on bedliner out of a can does not stay on as well as sprayed on with a gun
just the way it is
I've see bumpers painted with the rattle can bedliner, first thing ya know there are rock chips, can't just touch up a small area have to do the whole bumper again.
From years of experience paint is the way to go

I never said rattle can bedliner stayed on better than bedliner sprayed on with a gun, just that it's more durable than rattle can paint.

Of course you can touch up a small area, as long as you're decent with a rattle can. :ROTFL: :ROTFL: :ROTFL:

I'll gladly pay $1-$2 more for increased durability.

Hammer tone paint just blends invisably.
Even looks good when slathered on (without runs though)

Spray on bed liner works. If that's the route you want to go, go for it.
It's better than rust!

Toms and tjkj are right here, getting the same color after the bedliner has faded and chipped will be real fun, trust me you'll end up spaying it all over again because you end up with a spot that is noticeably nicer than the rest.

Weld the cap ends and drain holes shut then paint.
