Front pulley clutch was spinning on shaft now replaced with fixed unit. Generator place said he hates those and said it should be no problem. Did all work for free!

You mean you have a solid pulley/shaft connection now?

You should have replaced the clutch or the complete alternator with clutch.

Sounds like your alternator repair shop mechanic may cause your tensioner to fail in the near future, that's if your serpentine belt doesn't snap or wrap itself around something before that.

A Fixed decoupler didn't work for others in the past. Do a search for previous posts.

If you leave a solid pulley, you will wear out your belt tensioner. That will run you over $300 for a new one and a belt. You can buy a new decoupler pulley for $60 and then a 17mm impact hex for $25 and fix it (as long as you have an impact gun) for $85. Or you can go to autozone and get an alternator with a new pulley and a lifetime warranty for about $90 after your core return refund.

That solid pulley will wreak havoc on your accessory drive system, or spin right off on its own. It's been tried.

You guys hate fixed pulleys the original lasted 95k, new alt lasted 25k. I want a better option. Guy did work said there is only one vehicle that needs this clutch Volvo. Figure I should trust him he has 5000 rebulits in his shop. I did mention about clutch pulley he scoffed. Do you think this is problem the clutch looses it and spins freely? He did pull brushes not sure what he did maybe he felt sorry to get me going. Fixed is red lock tighted on nut

VW TDI's have them too. When they fail, i.e. sieze up and become fixed, they destroy belt tensioners. It is well documented over on TDIClub.

Ask your guy how many of those 5000 rebuilds are from diesels.

GM thought diesel engines were basically the same as gas engines too, and put them in Oldsmobiles. Ask them how it turned out.

you want an option that will last more than the original 95k?? i think a $90 part every 100k is a great deal. The second alt going in 25k, to me that was just a cheap aftermarket unit. You get what you pay for. The fixed pulley wont damage the alternator.

The issue with the fixed pulley inst at the alternator. He may be an alternator expert, but not a Jeep CRD expert. The solid pulley will transfer the vibration and jolts of the motor to the belt tensioner. This will fail prematurely, causing you a completely new problem which is more expensive then the solid pulley, which will likely still be functioning properly at that time.

Right on for you. A guy has a right to make up his own mind. Come on back and let us know how well this works.
