Couldn't tell you why.

Bought it at 30k, SEGR installed the first week. I know that was working, because if I ever installed the bypass plug, (First time I did that was years later after using the block plate) I was rewarded with an instant CEL for EGR flow. Got the GDE tune after the first engine blew, which was Feb-April of 2008. There was a time I wasn't doing oil changes quite so maniacally... That was also on the original engine. New engine came with 60k on it, into body that now had 60k... Did oil changes at 6k or less from then on, even as low as 3k from 120k-130k miles to try and keep engine cleaner. Didn't change anything in reliability, bottom end failed at 134k without ever running low on oil or oil pressure. (gauge monitored!)

I don't think anyone has done more to try and ensure reliability for a daily driver than I did. The top of the engine (hell, the inside of the cylinders too) all looked great when I tore it down trying to find that tapping noise. No deposits or slime anywhere, just smooth oil coating.

The only problem was the huge hole in the side with black oil dripping out at the end.

Messing with EGR stuff is bad news in the form of fines, so maybe we shouldn't be so critically talking about our favorite tuner and what he says he does and for what reasons...

If the CEL you got after installing the bypass plug was EGR related (likely), then something was up. I use my plug all the time and never get a CEL unless I neglect to seat it correctly. Did you scan to get the code? Did you test the bypass plug when you first installed the SEGR? If no CEL was triggered then, there was almost certainly something out of whack with the EGR valve or related components when you got the CEL you are referring to.

With no significant EGR activity, it stands to reason that the oil should gradually become less filled with soot with frequent oil changes unless there is quite a bit of combustion gas passing by the rings.
