it should work well for about 2 years - and then I'd make sure I always had jumper cables
they don't give much warning - they just stop working...

My battery lasted over 5 years and could of gone longer so I replaced with the same. I don't know why so many others have problems with theirs.

Well......in 2000, Johnson Controls bought Optima. They immediately opened a plant in Mexico - so from 2000 to 2010 1/2 the production was in Colorado, 1/2 in Mexico. in 2010 they closed Colorado.
If you had a battery made in Colorado - it's probably still working - if you had one made in Mexico - Warranty is 2 years and they die about 2 years and a month or so....

Is the CRD charging system specially programmed for an AGM battery, and if so, will it work properly for a traditional one?

There's no electrical difference between AGM and Acid

the AGM just traps the acid so that it doesn't flow.

The rumor was that AGM was chosen because of the 'vibration' of the Diesel,
but some of them died on the dealership lots and were replaced with standard batteries without problem.

Actually AGM's do require special charging operation.
