Has anybody thought of mounting rooflights to the siderails, like this:

I'm looking for a way to add some more lights, but not have them get in the way of ski/bike/canoes on the roof. I'm thinking that if I put the crossbars a little closer together, it will leave a little room on the silver part of the crossrail, maybe I can put a U-Bolt around it and mount the lights to that (one on each side). Not sure how silly it would look, yet.

And the obligatory poor-quality mock-up:

Cool idea Se7enLC!! What kind of mounting hardware do you think it would take to hold a light in place on the side rails? That would look pretty good especially with the roof rack.

Not really sure. I guess it depends on what the light has for attachment points itself. I'm thinking that if I go to a plumping supply store, I should be able to find pipe clamps that have a bolt or metal strap I can attach to. Either that or use a u-bolt, maybe even mount it sideways or with a metal shelf bracket to give another attachment point.

I'd sorta like a way to lock it, but I'm thinking that will be tough.

Good idea Jeff! I'd say poke around some rigs and see what kind of mounting brackets the lights come with. Or go to a store and see if you can pull one out of the box to see what it comes with and go from there. Most lights come with some sort of adjustable bracket and mounting post/bolt. So even if the mounting point wasn't square you could still aim it.
