Haha it's cool I'll take some pix today. By the time I got her unstuck it was rly dark out. I'm glad I learned they don't hold well before I went wheeling deep in the woods. That would have sucked to get stuck in the woods with no hooks.

You need to be really careful where you attach recovery points on a Liberty. It needs to be a trailer hitch or tow hook using the factory mounting point in the rear or something that uses the factory mounting points in the front. Look how beefy the brackets are that come with the factory hooks.

Improperly mounted hooks/shackles can take somebodies head off when they break loose or do serious damage to your Jeep. The link I posted above uses the factory front holes to mount d ring shackles safely. Another option is to mount a front receiver hitch which also can be used to mount racks. I'm happy with the factory hooks.

Even with the factory hooks, if they're installed with the M bolts, they'll pull right out with a couple hard yanks. They came from the factory with stud plates which are way stronger. I installed a Detoures backbone winch mount with a smittybilt XRC 10 winch when mine pulled out. You wouldn't believe how well that things attached. It even has 2 places for D Rings. :2cents:

Also a good recovery snatch strap that stretches will cut down on the shock load drastically.

So the oem tow hooks come with a plate in addition to the bolt? How does that work?

Also I did use a yellow recovery strap. I didn't use chains.

Here's how i do it. These nut strips slide inside the unibody openings and inside the crossmember. Bolts go in the tow hook holes from the bottom and holes get drilled in the crossmember.

This is what the front d-rings look like on a KJ.

Brb going to buy those. It was entertaining to see a piece of my bumper shoot 100 ft in the air. My friend actually caught it too lol. I will defiantly install those hooks with those brackets. I hope i didnt do too much damage so I cant mount them.

Scares me that is seems you all weren't doing anything wrong, but indeed ripped out the tow hook. Makes me not even want to chance it.

"I drilled through the metal under the plastic bumper. Found out today ( the hard way) that it wasn't a very good anchor point. They ripped through the metal bumper when I got stuck. "

If I'm reading this right they weren't properly installed using the 3 factory holes and proper hardware.

Hopefully I don't ever have to use my tow hooks (dual front and one in the rear), but how strong (weak) are the M bolts?

As far as I know the rear isn't a problem. It uses nutserts(sp?). It's the non-factory front Mopar hooks with m-bolts that are suspect, although I've never had an issue with mine. I've always gotten out with a slow steady tug and never whaled on them.

I'm sure it's been covered, but if the front tow hook(s) are installed from the factory, do they use M bolts or something else?

Was it a Recovery strap? Or a Towing Strap? The yellow ones you find at AutoZone and HomeDepot are not stretchy like a Recovery or Snatch strap. Towing straps have no 'give', where as a recovery strap is stretchy which puts less stress on the vehicles and more power where needed.

This post explains the difference -

Here is a cool video of a KJ (BennyMigs) pulling out a stuck Range Rover on the beach.

Here is another video of me pulling a stuck XJ out of a mud hole with my KJ. (With the front tow hook - it never moved)
