Thanks for keeping this great site up and running. Simple question really, with some preventative TLC, some investments (GD, mods) , is the CRD reliable and capable? It will be a North American overland vehicle and a (hopefully efficient) daily driver. I've got a line on one with 183 k miles (I figure if it has gone that far it was well cared for), it is rattle free and nothing odd seems to be happening. It's 5K. Will have my mechanic look at it but looking for overall experience from people who know how to take care of these diesels.

Any input is appreciated.

A lot of miles, but with the proper maintenance, it should be fine. I personally wouldn't buy one with that many miles unless the price is right.

Service records are essential. Some kind of EGR neutering is necessary to keep these running.

Check out recent thread by Green Diesel Engineering re: new info about rocker damage. I would only buy one with 180k miles if it had an EGR delete or GDE tune, AND had been serviced with good quality 5/40 oil. . . both of the above before 70k miles.

Ya pay yer money and ya take yer chances.

good luck

Thanks to you both, I took it for a second test drive and the power flatten out during the run. The search now continues...
