Okay, finally got this thing apart and out where I can see it. I don't see anything wrong at first glance, but someone mentioned there should be pins or something on the back of the TC. I don't see them. Is this true?

Thanks,

Here are pics of everything:

Dang. So what's wrong with my transmission? It's slipping, won't really move while in any gear. Is it possible that the tc is bad despite the outside looking ok? There was no metal in the oil pan before I started this adventure.

Unless you cut it open, it is not possible to examine the TC components.
Typically when a TC fails, the springs start bottoming out and the driver experiences
what is colloquially referred to as 'shudder.'

Slipping is likely to have started either as a wornout pump, or as a failed valve
in the valve body which the Trans-Go kit replaces. This transmission in the CRD is
notorious for that failure.

Did you check the transfer case cable?

Describe as precisely as you can the symptoms, and perhaps somebody here can get you on the right road.

Here are the symptoms:

For the few weeks leading up to this, I felt a shudder at 2700rpm in every gear.
Last summer we moved from Colorado to New England. I pulled about 4500lbs with the Liberty most of the way while we moved and it was HOT outside while we did that. I never got a trans temp warning though.

About 2 weeks ago, the transmission began slipping. So bad that I couldn't move more than a few feet. I could sit there, in gear, and stand on the throttle and nothing would happen. Drive, Rear, 4wd, nothing. It would move for a few seconds then stall out. I barely got it into the garage. Before I started pulling it apart, I got these codes:
P0700 Transmission Control System
P0731 Gear 1 Incorrect Ratio
P0876 Powertrain
P0501 Speed Sensor Range (this is yellow)

I pulled the pan off, there are no chunks of metal. Filters probably need to be replaced, but they are intact.
I pulled the tranny off and took out the TC. It looks okay (pictures here https://picasaweb.google.com/109199982702464952248/CarStuff)

I guess, I need to know what to order so I can get this thing back together. New TC, pump and valve body rebuild kit? What else? Other ideas?

Thanks,

Okay, thanks to Ranger for making me check the flat filter. I found this:

BAM. So now I know what's wrong. Still going to replace the TC and put in a shift kit.

thx

Lots of folks including myself misdiagnosed a split flat filter as a tranny failure ;-(

Good luck putting it back together!

Based on the other pics I've posted, I have had a few people say that the clutch packs are shot and I need a full rebuild (or replacement). There's metal dust all in the pan and in the bell housing. There are no chunks, just dust.

This is where I get hung up. I'm not opposed to a full rebuild, but I don't want to if I don't have to.

Any thoughts?

(ps, Drewd, pming you about your used one now)

thx

Rebuild kits are cheap, <$300, and if you have the time, given that you have already pulled it out, I would at least mic the clutch plates and see if they are in spec. It would be annoying to replace the TC and the pump and find out it needs to be rebuilt......

That's what I'm doing. I ordered a rebuild kit and a manual this week. I'll dive into it soon.
