I had it towed into the dealer for repair. It was rumbling and belching smoke, CEL is on, nothing new there! The tech says he hears internal engine noise. They wanted to replace MAP sensor(I just did it 3000 miles ago)plus I clean that thing every few months. They also wanted to do the EGR(had that done 2000 miles ago) The injector and labor is going set me back $1500($900 for the part alone) Speaking of part, it maybe time for the CRD and yours truly to part. Breaking up is so hard to do, especially with this vampire on my credit card. I've owned it since it had 25,000 miles on it, now it has 132,000. So with this new job, I've sunk $9431 into this since I bought it. I pull a 5000 lb trailer any ideas on a replacement vehicle. I'm thinking Nissan Pathfinder?? :dead:

A monkey could put that injector in, GDE sells them, IDParts has them reconditioned for around $450. The only thing you would have to pay for is the ECU flash, $80-$100 to input the new injector code.

Fret not, seriously. Buy a socket kit, a torque wrench, and a 17mm crows foot socket.

ECU flash is not even necessary for a new injector. The code is just for fine balancing of each injector's flow rate - we're talking less than 5% usually. It will run fine without inputting the new injector code.

The Stealerships just want to replace parts. Not troubleshoot. Get the jeep to a known Jeep CRD mechanic. Being at 132k you did change the timing belt? Did they remove the intake hose. Start the engine and check for popping and blowing from the intake? If it is you jumped time and or have rocker damage.

At 132k and the EGR was in use? Not good. I bet on rocker failure.

Listen to what the folks are saying here. I bought a truck that sounded like that, but the engine would die in a few seconds. The dealer told the previous owner that he needed a new engine. I took it apart, down to the head, found dirt and broken rockers, nothing else. Yes, major work in my case, but it can be done. Fine folks here are extremely helpful and know a bunch about these CRDs.

Hi, Yes it's still using the EGR valve, which I had replaced last October. The timing belt was done a few years ago, along with the rollers and water pump. I guess I don't understand how a diesel engine can need rockers for valves at 132,000. When I bought this I did so with the idea it would out last my previous 1994 Grand Cherokee that I traded with 325,000. I had to do very little to that little straight six during that time. What will getting the rockers done cost at a CRD mechanic? There are only two listed here in NH.

I spotted the list of trusted mechanics here in NH, they are from the TDI Club. Does anyone know of a CRD mechanic in NH, not a Jeep dealer? I'm in the SW corner of NH so Brattleboro, VT or Northern, MA would work. I had no idea the EGR would cause the rockers to wear out. My PHD from The School of Hard Knocks keeps getting more expensive..........Ugh!

We would recommend at tune, it eliminates the need for replacing many of the parts you have changed...for a fraction of the cost. What are the fault codes stored on the ecm? We have new injectors for $500 shipped if you actually need one.

Good Luck

A dude I know is a TDI mechanic. He is a former coworker. I have his card in my jeep. He does lots of business with IDparts.

Tell him a CSX employee sent you. He probably won't remember me as I was starting when he was leaving.

I'm back from the dealer. $1290, I still have my wallet and 10 fingers though. It ran OK ,did a fair amount of bucking when lugging higher gears, but was smoothish at highway speed. The engine was clattering more than usual on the ride. My wife was following and reported to me it was still smoking when under load. I will likely have it at Trembly's in New Boston next week, he will get a call tomorrow. No CEL on the hour ride home. Will places like Trembly's put in these SEGR units or do the GDE? Tune?? What will the Rocker replacement set me back as this is likely the next step? Thanks for the advice from everyone.

at 132k and still using a EGR. I would think the rockers are failing and causing smoking, building up carbon and failing injectors.

I do not know who would do installs for you. Most here do the maintenance on our jeeps. As far as rocker's I would ask around for a good Jeep CRD mechanic where you live.

GDE tune is all that is needed. That can be done a few ways. Talk yo Keith about it. I wish I could use my programmer, but they are VIN specific and Keith has to reset it.

From what I know about Rich, he was a CSX yardmaster and worked on cars. He moved west and went to school to pursue his pazsion of restoring cars. It didn't work out and he moved back east.

Hello and good bye. I traded the CRD today for a Toyota Tacoma Dbl Cab. My Jeep days are done until they get reliable cars again. I appreciate all the advice you have given me. Happy Easter to all.

Jeeps are not quality for sure. That's why i have a few Fords and a VW.

But they are fun!

That is a bunch of CRAP!! Jeeps are made as well, or better than any other vehicle. Jeep owners tend to tinker more (and probably cause far more problems than they fix) because they are enthusiasts. No vehicle is perfect, and when you bought a CRD, you bought an unusual vehicle. Now you have a plain jane, nothing turd.

Enjoy your jap tinker toy, but don't cut our real vehicles down.

I do like the Jeep CRD it is fun and drive it every day. I plan on keeping it for years. But i have never had a car i had to work on more. Thank God i'm a mechanic. So i make sure i have a few choices in the driveway when it breaks again and it will. Sorry but that's a fact.

Agreed, this is the most troublesome vehicle I've owned. Great hobby vehicle but the sales spin fooled me into thinking I was buying a daily driver with good fuel economy and great towing capacity.
