I've done some research of old threads on this subj, yet still would like to hear back from anybody who has done something similar to their Liberty CRD. I own an Dodge Ram pickup with the Cummins diesel, and have had good results in using a Fleetguard LF9028 filter. This filter combines full-flow and by-pass sections in one filter. Considering the tight spaces around the Liberty's engine and elsewhere under the hood, I'd like to find an adaptor to block off the stock filter location and remote mount an LF9028 somewhere. If anybody's done similar, or has any suggestions, please let me know.

Thanks,

Steve

I installed an Amsoil by-pass unit using a spin-on adapter at the original filter location. This relocated the standard full flow and adds the bypass filter all on a mount which I located between the battery and the master cylinder. Pictures here: http://www.syntheticlubes.com/crd_bypass.html

You may be able to use the spin-on adapter at the original filter location like the Amsoil unit uses if you can find a spin-on mount for the LF9028. The only limitation if you choose to mount it where I did mine would be the length on the LF9028...it may be too long to fit here.

amslube,

I saw the dual-filter Amsoil mount, but couldn't find a single-filter remote mount (unless I'm missing something). I thought they used to offer one, the BMK-14. Any info anybody can provide will be appreciated.

Single remote bypass filter mount is the BMK21. Here's the link: http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/filters-and-by-pass-systems/by-pass/filters-and-mounts/single-remote-bypass-kit?zo=501359

Will follow with interest. Am considering same action.
Today have been viewing http://www.jackmasteroilfilters.com.au...considering that is where I hail from.
It is much easier to purchase elements.

Amsoil has three distributors in Australia if you are interest in the Amsoil product. Click this link and select Australia. I don't know how far they are from you...https://www.amsoil.com/international/distributors.aspx

The bypass filter or a centrifuge removes soot and keeps the oil passages from clogging up.
When the oil passages plug up you can kiss your rockers and turbo good by.
True in OZ, you don't have the EPA who shoves EGR down our engines throats, but any soot in the oil is not good for the engine. Catching the soot with a bypass filter or centrifuge lengthens the engine life.

Amslube,

I would like to know if you need to remove the battery to replace the filters?

Also, Filtration Solutions has a CRD kit, but I am not sure where they would have it mount:

The battery does not have to be removed to replace the filters. There is enough room to spin them off and remove them to the right side of the mount.

The link to the unit on your post looks like a much longer filter and most likely would not mount where mine is located. I have about 1/2" or so of room under my filters...just enough to spin them off and remove.

I just called the company, the filter mounts horizontally on the frame rail with a bracket that they provide. Pressure taps off the oil pressure sensor and returns through a hole you drill in the oil filler tube.

Warp... do you have a write up on your Centrifuge set up.... how much crud do you get out of it?

Amslube thankyou for your response.
I have carefully considered this. They are all quite a distance away but we are used to that in this country.
To explain: The first issue that make it rather expensive to do is that they have to add Import duty, uplift, margins and a little tax we call GST that goes on top of all those other incumberances....right at the end when you least want it. In short I believe I would have to approximately double the USD750 to even consider installing the system you used and there is no easing with replacement filters. That is probably conservative as history dictates. Same rules apply.
Secondly, whether I mount a single spin on by-pass unit or the double as you did, the under-hood arrangement of the Export Model is so very different that I must juggle things to make room for it. To illustrate, I have not fitted a ProVent on the side the battery lives as it just did not fit in the space available to my satisfaction. I went about that matter a different way.

I did admire your photos of your installation and went to the reference you gave at that time but I just cannot make it fit into the space available and still remove a spin-on filter.

The Jackmaster allows access from the top and that has heavily influenced my decision, among other reasons and the chap who makes these units and sells them has been a delight to deal with - he has given me time to juggle and politely checks in periodically to offer help....as he did just today.

I certainly was torn regarding the HOW TO and WITH WHOM to go. In my favour, I guess, although on a different scale, in a past life I engineered turn-key planning-in arrangements (on paper and then as Johny-on-the-spot at commissioning) - so if it didn't work I was the one with the gun to my head should failure be eminent.

Thanks so much for the helping hand.

I realised that warp2diesel had also responded. We do have an EPA but not so proactive as yours nevertheless it is growing exponentially in power weight and authority. They presently do spot checks if they notice something odd with a vehicle such as a BOV shooosh on certain road vehicles. The system cannot vent to atmosphere but once they notice it is time for the fine-toothed comb.

Warp, it could be contended that mods that make oil cleaner by whatever means are among the best we can do in that 10% by volume of very clean oil (cleaned in the order of 2 microns) is returned to the top end near the rockers.

There are obviously reports of apparent wear that seems to be attributable to the lower, middle and upper regions of the engine. I wonder why there is so much resistance to the addition of such a positive modification. I have come to a few conclusions that don't belong here but it seems that we are not getting anywhere (publicly) towards an answer to that particular question.

It would apear that the most direct action available is removing the abrasives you mention - they seem to be a largely misunderstood beasty given their propensity to coalesce when left to their own devices in the quickly depleted reserves of an oil charge if the wrong oil and change interval is chosen.

I note Greendiesel are kindly sharing some information. For those of us who cannot yet afford GDE tunes it is surely in our best interests to take some action to abate the problems we perceive with these motors especially if they will be a constant positive effect on the life of the engine.

It has proven more important (to me) to get my hands on good diagnostics gear and get away from the dealerships and those who don't understand modern diesel and then work on cleaning up the internal environment of the engine as much as possible.
Cheers

Auberon:

Completely agree about the deleterious effects of soot. I will be installing a bypass filter system on CRD #2, and probably retrofitting one into #1.
