That's a creative mod and very well done. The US market EGR valves are different though and I wonder if they would function the same if doing this.

Also, do you have a boost gauge to see the cracking pressure of the valve? No possibility of leaks at full boost?

Would it be possible for you take a video of the blow-off in use. I would really like to hear the sound

under load of course.

Based on the pictures I'll go with CATCRD's comment that the US, presumably Canada too, EGR valve is different although the parts fiche is less than clear on this point (big surprise). That said it seems to me all Glend has done is change blocking off the EGR (plug the input to the exhaust and plug either the intake input to the EGR upstream at the intake elbow or plug the EGR output at the EGR) to vent the EGR output to atmosphere. Assuming the US spec EGR does in fact not leak at inappropriate times I don't see any particular reason why this mod wouldn't work on a US spec EGR although I'm not sure the direction (up vs. down) the open pipe on the EGR side would run but if that's an issue it's easy enough to fix.

The mod does have the benefit of:
1. leaving a functional EGR in the system with the GDE tune to bleed/blip excess boost pressure on those occasions when it needs to and
2. provides an obvious flag if the EGR does fail open as you would instantly vent boost to atmosphere. With that in mind if one was to try this on a US EGR system I'd think it would be a really good idea to pull the system (intake elbow, pipe to EGR, and EGR) for a really good cleaning in order to make sure the system is completely free of soot and other goop and will continue to function properly.

A bit more of a mod than I think I'll ever do but interesting.

Well when I go to pick up my bit and pieces of a CRD motor next weekend I will see if the EGR system is left and if so post pictures of it.

Our EGR valves are electrically actuated by a solenoid. That's why I ask.

Ok, but I'm not trying to be contrary or take anything away from what you've done - far from it. It's very clever. I just want US members to be aware that our EGR valve is electric and not vacuum operated, and may not have the same pop-off effect built in. Here is one for sale on ebay.

Saw a Mercedes CDI with the same thing. Sounds cool when driving thru car show with a bunch of people looking at you, and egr beltches out exhaust note on throttle decel but has zero performance benefit. Need a sound byte or vid ;-)

Glend is correct that Keith is using the erg valve as a blow off valve on the US engines. He has stated that to me when I purchased the tune from him.

Good job, however, it should not vent to atmosphere according to modification legislation in Oz.
Suggest you start with the Vicroads hot-rod modding guide for road use (not track).

I realize now that I partly misinterpreted your original writeup. I didn't realize that you left the vacuum actuation line connected to the EGR valve so it would be operated by the ECU. I thought yours was just popping due to excess pressure on throttle lift. I'm aware that GDE retains that stock feature in all their tunes - it should work just fine in the US market versions if you leave the solenoid connected.

See picture of US setup from papaindigo's thread. In our case you would just cut the "bronze-looking/blackened" egr pipe a few inches after it emerges from the valve.

The export EGR is primarily controlled by a PWM controller via the ECU as I understand it / augmented by vacuum.

The turbo surge protection operates the same regardless of import or export models...for the most part. North American versions have a faster acting valve as it is electric, so the opening time slightly less.

Did the mod earlier today, was a bit tricky making a block off plate but here is the result:

So I just did this and it is nowhere near as loud as that..

Did you leave you pipe round or did you pinch it closed more???

and I did spray brake cleaner into the egr when I welded the other pipe shut

I didnt connect the tube back onto the egr valve port. All I did was take the EGR tube off, cut the end that attaches to the manifold and then block that off. It passes a small amount of oil so I will eventually put the tube back on it and make it vent under the vehicle.
