Talk to the guy having the annual MI VW TDI (diesel) GTG if some fellow diesel folks could drop by for a day of fun, food and diesel engine work or tunning. Here is link to Marty's, the guy that is hosting this GTG, website Marty's shop with pictures and I am in several of the pictures believe it or not.

I have been hosting these GTG's at my house in OCT for about 5 years now and we have a lot of fun. I have put the web address below for the first page of the VW TDI Forum where the GTG is being planned. I will be at this GTG, it's a 700 mile trip for me, as I have been going to MI GTG for about 3 or 4 years now and they are a great group of folks. I hope some of the Canadian guys show up with some of that very fine beer they brought last year.

Anyway what will be going on is work on the cars, timing belts, skid plate installs, brake bleeding, to chipping by Jeff from Rocket Chip. He may be doing my CRD if I have a few extra dollars left over. He discounts the price for these GTG's when he does a bunch of them, if you have questions about chipping here is link to Rocket Chip for more info and to contact him.

If you are coming a long distance like me you can just visit local store for sodas or something to cook on the grill, however there is generally enough pot luck by locals to go around. I have generally just give the host a $20 bill to help cover port-a-pot expense. This is one of the two highlights of the year for me, the other being the one I hold in OCT. Yes I still host them even though I don't own a VW any longer.

GTG check in pages

Chipping sign in page

I would like to see a few of you folks show up for this so I could meet you and really talk diesel, Jeeps, or at least tell sea stories.

This seems like it's for VW's. It's for CRD's as well?

It's true it is a VW thing, but the VW diesels have been around for years and built a following. But hey, a diesel is a diesel. Marty is like me wanting to help start something like the VW's have, a social & work gathering for the diesel CRD. If you would like to come and say have someone help install skid plates or show you how to change a fuel filter, there are peple there that would be glad to help. If you just want to save a few bucks from a dealer visit and have no desire to turn a wrench and need somethine like that done someone will be more then glad to do it for you and in most cases for little or no fee, depending on the individual you ask. Marty would expect a small fee for doing fuel filter change, where one of the non machanic's like me probably would do it for free.

If you don't need help, say just the rack to install the fuel tank skid, then you just email Marty or let me know here, and we make sure you can get lift time and maybe a helping hand. The rack time would be free of charge as far as I know, but myself I would give Marty a fiver for the privilege of the use of the rack for saving you a lot of big bucks of a dealer or the struggle of doing it on the ground.

Hey there will be a tanker there from local fuel supplier with B100 for sale. If this is your first diesel you can learn a lot from these guys as the VW diesel has all the same quirks and then some that your CRD has. And if nothing else it a fun time to just eat and talk diesel. This is always a very mixed crowd with education levels ranging from HS to PhD's, manual labor working stiff to college professor or MD will be at these GTG. One of the ace tech's and font of knowledge in this VW crowd is a computer engineer who besides having a masters in computer engineering also has a masters in biology. So as you see it really always turns out a nice bunch of people helping one another.

I can vouch for these GTGs. We have regional ones and a national one each year so far. All diesels are welcome and you meet some great folks.
I don't have my TDI anymore either, but the money I have saved on these, and the tools and information was amazing while I drove my VW for
6 years, 250.000 miles. We need to begin to start one of these for the Jeep CRD. The VW crowd designed its own tools that VW did not have,
we hook our laptops to the car with software designed to read codes and adjust parameters. I would not hesitate to show up, these guys and gals love diesels and you will not believe the knowledge at one of these gatherings. Just hang out, take the good ideas and weigh them, it is just like
the Internet, some well thought out ideas and some not. But over all you will have a great time. And we love to see different diesels, that is why many of us bought the CRD. Its a road trip, why not!

MooCar and I are talking about it.

I plan on leaving here (Poplar Bluff, MO) sometime around 4 to 6 am Friday morning (hey I'm an old gizzer and somedays it's harder to get up then others) and hope to be at the Holiday Inn Express at exit 110 on I-96 (SE Side of Lansing) Friday evening by 7 PM at latest. That said however if I get to bed early enough where I can get up earlier I could be leaving as early as 3 am Friday morning. GPS says 13+ hours, but I think I made the trip last year in about 10 or 11 hours.

Have you checked in with Marty the guy hosting the event? Here is a link to his website TDI Specialist t has his email link, map link and phone number. He is the person to talk with to make sure you have a slot in the shop, the shop can hold about 4 or 5 cars at a time.

He only has one rack so if you are doing a after turbo install you may need the rack, if before turbo install you probably will not need the rack. In any case make sure you bring proper size drill bit to be sure you have one and make it a carbide tip drill if possible. It has been too long since I looked under the Jeep at exhaust to see how hard it is to get to back side of turbo. Front side of the turbo would be tough but I think I really never paid attention to how hard it would be to do a EGT on. It's the wife's Jeep and she only watches the fuel gage.

Looking forward to seeing you there. If you need to call me, 573-686-8868 anytime between 8 am and 8 pm is good. I will be taking I-57 to US 24 across IL to I-69 at Ft Wayne IN so as to miss Chicago and Indy mess.

Sounds great! I'll probably leave around 10 am Friday to try and beat the rush. I should be getting there at about 3pm. Are you sure you don't want to come thru Chicago and play a little bumber tag? I may go straight to Egauge in Perry, MI. I have a gauge that is brighter than the other. With the holiday weekend I should call first to see if someone will be there.
I'll be staying at a Best Western in Fowlerville. I sent Marty an email but I didn't get a response. Should I call him? Looking forward to meeting you.

I stayed in the Worst Western one time, never again. If you need to call Marty, ring him up.

Some of us are meeting up for breakfast Saturday morning at the Big Boys there in Fowlerville, if you can meet us there.

My guess is by the time I get to MI I will be ready for the motel, I'm getting a little old for these kind of long drives.

I will send you my cell phone number later (I don't know the number off hand) and you check up on my where abouts Friday.

Since you are coming from the west like me, you might want to check out the Hodiday Inn Express on I-96 exit 110 in Okemos (Lansing) MI, it's 18 miles west of Fowlerville and with discount was $74, just $6 more then BW at Fowlerville. Give me a gingle after you check in and maybe if I got away sooner then expected and making good time we can get to gather for supper someplace. My one splurge will breakfast Saturday at the Big Boys in Fowlerville.

You must have made your reservations way early. I checked with Holiday Inn. With their advanced purchase it would come to $88.68 after taxes per night. If I cancel ( I have jury duty the day :x ) they will charge me for both days. If I use my AARP card I get the privlige of paying $5 more per night but I get to cancel without penalty. Doesn't seem fair. :( If it looks like your going to get in early enough call me on the cell when you get close to Lansing. I have no problems driving to the hotel.

I'm told I should have the new CCV for testing on this trip. That will be 1400+ miles that weekend. You CRD guys that make the GTG will be the first at the forum to get a look at the thing installed or possibly find out how easy to install or remove.

I wasn't expecting you. From the sound of yours I would not drive it across this little one horse town I live in.
