Hey Guys,

Kinda wanted to know what y'all think. I have a '05 CRD. I just trailered 3K lbs approximately 650 miles. During the trip the torque converter shuttered on three separate occasions. Since getting down to Charleston, the mileage has tanked. I am getting 20 mpg with GDE tune and city driving (40 mpg and several stops). I changed out from balled tires to general grabbers which I believe attributes to a couple MPG drop. Recently I have noticed a small (200 rpm) rise before the car launches. I don't recall that from before. I am wondering if a drop in mileage is attributed to torque converter clutch slippage or general breakdown of the torque converter.

Ultimately, what had really got my attention and the reason I write is that when approaching a stop sign from just after starting the car, the car shook like a manual stalling with the clutch still engaged. Is it possible that the lockout clutch is the problem here? Anybody have this experience before? Car stalled and problem did not repeat, thank goodness.

Sounds like the t/c to me.

There's a one-way valve, I think it's in one of the two filters, that can do this too... Mine had started to do that. Always as I slowed down and was basically idling while rolling. It was like it didn't want to disengage (like a manual transmission when you leave the clutch out/engaged while braking).. when I'd press the brake it didn't want to disengage and stop. It only lasted for a few seconds each time.

I took it to a shop, changed out the fluid for the correct ATF+4, changed both filters, and reset the TCM.

Hasn't happened once since then.

Mark

I'm at the 100K mileage point on the car. I did all the timing belt stuff and I bought gear oil, ATF, and filters to do the differentials and the transmission. Kinda wanted to hold out on the tranny because I wanted to go with a more robust TQ and didn't want to throw out 10 quarts of ATF in 10k miles. I guess everything is aligning for the job here in a couple weeks.

Yup, torque converter. The failure to release clutch on stopping just after start up is due to the check valve leaking down, and it takes a while for the pump to reprime and refill all the tranny fluid passages.

1) Will the dealership use my warranty if I can describe the problem without them able to replicate it?

2) Will they replace with a European one? I could do the work but it will cost about 500$ to do.

My experience is most likely no, if they can't duplicate it your out of luck :banghead:
and from what I'm reading here no on the euro tc :furious:
I think you just need your transmission serviced with new fluid and filters.
Get it done very soon and possibly avoid serious transmission troubles :5SHOTS:

The dealer did mine recently under warranty and stalling at first take off was one of the reasons for torque converter / front pump replacement. I have to say that it is running better than ever before.

They did not use the European Torque converter but some other one and they reflashed the computer module once again.

They affixed a new sticker near the old F37 sticker with a new reflash number written on it.

I have to say that this latest revision makes the CRD run like a dream.

Better than ever.... Quiet, smooth shifting, quick take offs with lots of power. I have the maf disconnected which turns the cell light on and I don't mind. Again I say smooth, QUIET and a joy to drive.

This is the way the CRD was meant to be out of the factory.

So... I finally got the dealership to replace the t/c. The interesting thing is that the car still drops a lot of RPM upon breaking to a stop and then revs back up. I am glad I got a free t/c out of the deal with 50 miles to spare on the warranty. However, they said they would not replace the pump. What does this pump do and can it be related to the idle drop? I just replaced filters and oil should be fresh.

My torque converter just died. I lost 4th gear at the same time.
I went to a torque converter rebuild shop. They cut mine open so I could see the mess. I bought a rebuilt converter for 06 and up 5.7L hemi. $125! We will see how that holds up. I can tell you already I love the low stall, jumps off the line! Oh by the way I put an old 99 Durango trans back in there. Didn't want to deal with no 4th gear if it was a trans problem and not the TC.

When looking at the Transtar catalog (2CR) you will see our converter is a med stall. The Hemi one (CR2B) is a low stall. This should help MPG also.

I also added a small brace to the flat oil filter and added an o-ring to the neck to help seal this filter to the pump. Now in the morning the trans engages as soon as I touch gear lever. I have always had a delay. I think the pump was sucking a little air around the filter neck.

Well 10 months later, mine is back at the dealer, they determined it needs a new TC and valve body.

The problem was that it didn't engage in 3rd, 4th and 5th.

I still haven't picked it up yet, they say that the valve body is on backorder.

It took a TC and front pump to cure my engine stalling, like clutch not pushed in when coming to a stop with a manual trans, issue as well as the fluid drainback after sitting overnight problem. It's been almost 2 years since I replaced both myself and no problems since.

Go figure... the Chrysler dealership had the t/c replaced and wanted to do the pump, but Toyota would not authorize it. Oh well, there goes a whole day worth of work.

Where can I find this front pump?

Most likely will be a dealer item. I was fortunate to find a brand new one (upgraded style) on Ebay for about half the cost of what the dealer wanted.

According to my notes from older posts the new pump PN is 68009879AB and IIRC it takes a different gasket but I don't know if the gasket comes with the pump. For what it's worth there is a eBay listing, I have no opinion on the seller, for ca. $160 presumably + shipping.
