It's easier to change the diff fluid than changing the oil ( at least changing the oil on a KK cause the filters a pain)

$30 if you use the good gear oil and RTV(4 qts of 85w-140 non-syn),that includes the 2qts of ATF+4 for the t-case also.

The shop prices may seem high but your mostly paying for a service and $30 per qt OEM gear oil.

100 k miles or more if you haven't been under water, why waste your money. Read your owners manual.

If you don't like your Jeep or want the diffs to last then by all means leave that syn junk in there to fry your bearings. The 8.25 is known to fry pinion bearings when using synthetic gear oil.

It's sad when you can change both diffs for less then $20 and it takes less then a hour to do both to totally ignore.

$70 was figuring 75w-140 synthetic and 80w-90 gl5. That what the manual says to use.

I may try to do it myself then. I dont really care about the T case just now, but wanted to change the front and back.

So should I NOT use syn for this? I was about to swap to synthetic for my oil on the next oil change, and figured I would put synthetic in the differentials as well. Im the type to keep a car around 150k miles so I like to make sure the parts needing to stay lubed up are taken care of.

So assuming Im only wanting to change the differentials, how much and what type/brand is the best or preferred?

Here is a good write up
viewforum.php?f=104

The rear takes about 2.2ish quarts, the front 1.9 quarts

The t case is real easy to do also.

It helps to use a transfer pump that screws on to the oil bottle. They are cheap at auto part stores.

Synthetic gear oil is not very good, this does not mean synthetic oils are not good for your t-case,trans,and engine since they are forced oiled systems but the diffs are a splash oiled system.Plus you you save alot of $$$ using non-syn gear oil.

The makers of some of the best hardcore offroad diffs like Currie and Hi9 clearly state do not use synthetic gear oil in there diffs.I paid $4000 for my rear Currie RockJock60 and use $4 per qt 85w-140 like they state.

Read a couple write ups and watched a couple youtube vids as well, Im definitely going to try to do this myself.

The question I have is, what weight gear oil? I have read threads where literally every single person in the thread gave a different suggestion....I would prefer to put the same in both as well unless that is totally a no no...the price is the same around here for 75w90, 75w140, 80w90 and 85w140. $5.99 for Coastal and $6.99 for Castrol or Valvoline.

I live in N. Texas so that is the weather I have to deal with, only tow once in a while and off road is not that often either. It is my daily driver if that matters city+hwy.

The owners manual for a 2010 says to use 75w-140 in the rear and 80w-90 GL-5 in the front.

See this is what I mean, the 2012 manual says to use 80w90 in front, and 75w90 in the rear...I didnt think much if anything changed from even the KJ, so its weird they keep changing some of these slightly...

You guys mess with this stuff all the time so I feel pretty safe in just using 80w90 in both and being done with it.

You will have no issues using 80w-90 front and rear.
