Just stumbled upon this thing:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/der-13266/overview/

and it seems a great idea, especially for the cramped space under crd's hood. nice thing is that is small enough to be placed under the bumper, where can receive proper cooling but won't interfere with the condenser/radiator/fan. I wish I had found it few weeks ago...

Has anybody tried this, or something similar (heat sinc/radiant heat type)?

Yea, I've seen those. I opted instead to purchase a generic from OPT ($48) and a thermostat bypass ($45). The Tru-blue is only 1 7/8" deep by 2 5/8" by 14" and will fit behind the electric fan where the original sits, after carefully cutting the integrated away.

So you took the integrated cooler out by cutting it out (so you only kept the condenser part) and in that place you installed the new cooler, correct? How efficient is it, did you have a gauge before and after installation? Just curious on how those coolers are, as I said before, it seems an interesting idea.

As you said, Interesting!
I wish there was some more info as to performance as I would rather not be the beta tester!

I do need a transmission cooler as I have a patched leak in on of my lines and also a few pin hole leaks in the cooler its self!

A guy on naxja posted a tranny question about something else, and he mention the cooler. He said there is a 10-15 degrees difference between inlet and outlet, measured with the ir thermometer. I think this could be a good choice as a secondary cooler.

Mine came stock with a trans cooler. Didn't all come stock with the cooler.

All crds came with a trans cooler incorporated in the condenser. The issue is that many folks here do towing, and for the piece of mind, they want more cooling for the transmission. The main issue for crd is the lack of space available to install an additional cooler, the one I linked is small enough to fit under the bumper.

The Derale style has been used as a fuel cooler too.

I am hoping it will fit nicely with my ARB bumper.

I have no opinion on this cooler but just to get a comment out there. There is ample room on the driver's side just behind the grill to mount a fairly sizable "radiator" style transmission cooler as opposed to putting a "finned" style cooler behind the bumper or even in the airflow thru the plastic bumper cladding. Without seeing specifications I wonder about the relative cooling performance of the 2 styles of coolers given that cooling, absent a force fan, is a function of airflow across the cooling surface, air temp, heat transmission ability of the cooler construction material, and cooling fin surface area. Seems to me that a "radiator" style cooler has more cooling surface and air flow would be through the cooler as opposed to a "finned" cooler that, if mounted behind the bumper, has it's cooling fins perpendicular to the air flow (not parallel) hence they are not, certainly not all, getting the benefit of full air flow.

Just personal thoughts for what they are or are not worth.

Yes but this style could be placed on a frame rail near the transmission and protected by the skid plates while still recieving enough air flow to cool it. I orginally found these when thinking about a fuel cooling system to keep the foaming of diesel fuel down but never got around to testing it.

Papa, you're right, but I think its way easier to add this cooler under the bumper or car frame rather than take grill out, make brackets, maybe polish/cut some plastic, etc.

Side note, I'd have to see how can I use a smaller version as a fuel cooler, or more exactly, where to install it. I'm thinking that should be bypassed in the winter...

Not having done this I won't comment on difficulty other than to observe that the grill is pretty much held in by plastic clips, unfortunately easy to break as I know. That said install of a "radiator" style tranny cooler is not too difficult and there are several options from past posts that I've like at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=75368&p=792909&hilit=cooler#p792909

So you took the integrated cooler out by cutting it out (so you only kept the condenser part) and in that place you installed the new cooler, correct? How efficient is it, did you have a gauge before and after installation? Just curious on how those coolers are, as I said before, it seems an interesting idea.

Sorry, I guess this one slid down the line and I forgot to reply. Yes I did the aftermarket mod install and I have no problems with it. It fits snugly behind the fan. The procedure was as follows:

-Remove bumper, skid plate, light rack, cross support, electric fan.
-Unclip AC/trans cooler lines from transmission and trans cooler. Remove and drain. I had discharged my AC during my top end teardown, but if you don't want to, I assume you should be able to loosen up all AC lines to get the grid up high enough to work on.
-with lines removed, cut off the crimp of the rubber hose from transmission side. note that if you are putting in a thermostat, the passenger side is the active line and the driver's side is the return.
-And I don't mean cut the aluminum pipe. The rubber pipe is crimped onto a flared end that is totally useful to feed your new line on and hose clamp onto.
-10' of hose was perfect. Attach a 5' length to each rigid oil line, hose clamp, stick a wad of paper towel in the end to keep out crap, and reinstall, running your new lines out the front under the CAC.
-zap strap the lines to the frame, running them across to the driver's side behind the cross member, then snake them around in front over top the wiring harness. I drilled a hole in a flange of the body to zap strap the coolant lines to make the curve.
-the rad I used was deeper, and shorter width-wise, but the right height. I cut out an appropriate sized piece of the stock cooler to make room for the cooler, then did a test turnover to check for leaks.
It was all good so I buttoned it back up.

I could go into a lot more detail, and I do have photos, but I seem to be a Luddite when it comes to uploading them.

Thanks for answering, I already installed a cooler, few weeks before I found out about the derale. I deleted the stock one completely. I found out which is the pressure line from the fsm even though for the cooler I installed it didn't matter. What I meant to ask you was how efficient is the derale cooler.
