so i took my care to the shop, three shops to exact, and the each had a differant diagnosis. three weeks later when i got it back it still did the same thing it did before. The first one was the jeep stealership and what they told me was that they weren't equiped to fix the tranny go figure. The second was a shop where I always take my cars and they tried the basics and they couldnt figure it out. The third was a tranny shop and when the said that it was ready i thought that they had ifxed it because they are the specialist, as i was driving home it hade the same problem.

the problem that i have is that the transmission disengages the first gear and goes into limp mode so at times when im driving i will only have second and third and my RPMs are real high. when this happens i turn my car off then i turn it on are it helps for a while but i can feel when the gear gets disengaged. i have no clue what it could be, but if i have to guess i wouls say is a sensor or something of that sort. another shop and i got quoted $ 500.00 just for the tear down of the tranny ontop of the rebuild kit $ 800.00 plus whatever parts are needed so ballpark about $ 2000.00 to $ 2600.00 if anybody has hade this problem i would appreciate the advice thanks.

Has the dealer given you Any indication as to what it might be? Have they pulled any diagnostic codes? The only time mine ever went into a limp-in mode was when the trans speed sensor went out.

My buddy's Dakota(witch has the same tranny as my '02 KJ)had the same problem. It turned out to be some internal valve that sends fluid to the cooler, the shop that fixed his tranny says it's common for thes trans to do this with fairly high miles.I cost my buddy $2500.00 to rebuild his tranny here in washington state. After the rebuild he has not had any problems and has put another 40,000 miles on.

i replaced the speed sensor in the tranny and the dealer cleared the codes, after i replaced the the speed sensor a code came up, it was loss of tranny preasure something like, the exact wording was either trans temp sensor Chk or trans pres sensor Chk i went tot he dealer and i ordered a transducer preasure sensor but i dont know if its going to do anything. One tranny guy said it sounded like my torque converter because he heared some wineding when accelerating but every body that looks at it have their own theory

Your trans problem has nothing to do with a speed sensor, your tranny is going into limp mode trying to cool itself down.If changing the temp sensor does not work(I highly doubt it will)you got a major cooling issue.Like I said in the first reply there is a valve inside these tranny's that controls the fluild flow to the cooler and are prone to going bad.It wouldn't hurt to add a aftermarket tranny cooler to,there cheap and easy to install and can be tied into the factory cooler to,I installed one and it only took about 15 min. to install and cost about $20.

Shouldnt the tranny light come on if its over heating? Just b/c its going into limp mode does not mean its trying to cool down.

You are right but most newer trans use the outgoing fluild(the cooler line going to the cooler)as the source to take the temp,if the fluild is not going to the cooler it will not register as being hot.My buddy's trans temp light never came on but way overheated the trans to kill it and my '01 grand had the same problem at 52,000 miles so I traded it of before it smoked the tranny, the dealership still gave me a good trade-in credit knowing about the tranny problem. Some other newer tranny's go into limp mode by being overfilled or underfilled or not enough internal psi,the 4le80 trans they use in the newer hummer's(military ones) are all messed up with this, they go into limp mode for no aparent reason.I spent a year in afganistan and seen many go into limp mode for overheating(not hard to do in 130 degree heat and a 7 ton vehicle not rated to be 7 tons)and other times it would just go into limp mode for no reason,no codes, fliud was good, and not overheated.Personally I hate computer controlled tranny's,rather have a torbo 350/400 or a C4/C6 any day.
