Yes, you load the same program in the ecu both ways. If you dont mind the extra cost for the flash tool, then do it yourself is definitely better since you dont leave the car w/o ecu, so you can still drive the jeep.

I'm also pretty sure you can rent that flashtool from GDE for only like $25. If I end up keeping this car, I'm getting the GDE tune as soon as I get the money.

I purchased the GDE Eco tune with flash tool.
Simple, trouble free ECU programming experience.

Drive in. Keith is kind of local so it was well worth the trip and knowledge.

I ordered the tool to go with the tune. I've had Keith perform a couple of small customisations that would have been painful if I didn't own it. I was also looking forward to possibly having it modified to support the 5V glow plugs.

Of course, I don't live in the US so cross border shipping multiple times quickly adds up.

I rented the Flash tool 3 years ago after it had only been an option a little while. It was easy to do. I completed it all in my driveway with the flash tool and a windows XP netbook computer.

I mailed mine in as I have another vehicle to drive. I mailed it out on Monday from Ohio, and got it back on Friday. Keith flashed it the same day he got it and shipped it out. Great service!

I can see where there might be advantages to buying the tool as opposed to renting it.

Does anybody recommend just buying the tool? What else can the tool be used for?

The tool can also be used as a code reader on (I believe) anything that is an OBD2 - this would be any vehicle since 1996. However, the programmer "marries" to the CRD, so it will only ever load programs to that specific ECU and vehicle. If you sell the Jeep, sell the programmer with it, and get some extra bucks.

I paid a deposit to get a tuned ECU sent and then sent mine back to GDE. The programmer was still new and I had problems getting it to load on mine.
