Thanks, Painemann. I can confirm that sensor replacement did not cure this problem. I will start tracing the harness back looking for a fault spot.....

Correction. She kicked in and I have sensor function. Guess we will see how long this lasts...

After replacing the sensor you normally have to do a bit start/stop driving for a few miles before the electronic modules are happy that the sensor is working. I had a bad connection to my speed sensor...fixed the bad connector but the speedo only started working about 5 days later!

Thanks painemann. This narrows it down for me a lot. I live on gravel pothole filled roads and I'm betting my wires are bad. Do you know if the new style speed sensor is the one mopar parts America sells

Still got exactly the same problem myself on a 2005 CRD and tried the sensor replacement and checking connections as well. Latest twist is everything can be fine at moderate speeds and the ABS light goes out if it was on previously when you start a new drive, but will light up again once higher speeds reached and maintained (around 70mph) then the odometer freezes up as before. Everything else ok including cruise control, speedo etc.

The only thing I can think of is that higher speeds stir up some crud in the diff causing the sensor to get spooked, any other ideas before I start stripping down the diff most welcome, I'm getting bored of it now......

Drove me nuts too, it was the undetectable split wire leading to the top of the sensor on the differential.... only the 2005 CRDs have that problem.

If you have already swapped the connector, then the wires are crossed, flip the wires and reattach them. drive the vehicle forward for about 15 feet or more and the lights should go off.

Took it to a Jeep tech and they tracked it down to the front passenger side (or drivers side if you are in the US and drive on the wrong side of the road) ABS sensor so whole hub was replaced.

Looking at other posts quite a few others have had the same experience, but if I was in the same position again I'd still start with the rear ABS sensor and diff oil flush anyway as they would eventually need doing anyway so you've nothing to loose. Tempted to order new wiring and pigtail anyway as they will be toast soon probably

The EVIC is still catching up with knowing the vehicle is moving so currently showing a predicted range of 110 miles for a fuel tank of diesel.

Thanks to everyone for ideas - without this forum I'd of sold the vehicle on by now.
