Greetings all , I just purchased an 05 locally "original owner" was sitting in a shop for the last 6 mo following a turbo replacement which afterwards seemingly developed a no power brake condition and no boost .
I have been familiarizing myself using the noob guide here and see theres plenty of good maintenence to keep me busy, I just feel as though theres possible engine damage either to the rods or perhaps rockers as the OO ( original owner) didnt do the T-belt at 100k which is my concern.

I was told by the shop that installed the new turbo that after the unit was on and running the jeep had no vacuum to the brakes, but have not dug in too much further as I wanted to read and discuss the issues before going about a diagnosis the wrong way .
I drove it home 5 miles, ( I have looked all over the country and found this one in my back yard literally) and it seems to have a lot of wasted fuel outy the tail pipe likely fuel that never saw boost .

would like to get an idea of how hard the injectors are to remove and do a compression test and if theres a certain brand of tester or adapter needed for our engine.

Any help is appreciated and my plan is to take my time and limit running it until theres a firm plan.
Thanks ,Scotty

No power brakes and no boost. Seems your vacuum line is not connected. The engine has an internal vacuum pump. The main vacuum line port is a metal tube that protrudes from engine near the intake throttle on driver's side. The rubber hose attached goes directly to the brake booster. A feed line off the booster area supplies vacuum to the turbo to control the vanes (which allows you to build boost). Check these lines for a major leak or something disconnected. If you do not have vacuum at the metal tube from engine, you have much bigger issues.

There is no vacuum at the large feed line from the block .
I also get a nice thump thump thump from the intake box with the fresh air-to-box hose like the engine may be breathing compression into the intake ?

not sure what apparatus to buy to do a compression test , my next move would probably be a removal and tear down following compression results .

I would also like to know this. Haven't found anything in the searches yet. Still going through results

not sure why you are getting no vacuum. the vacuum pump is way down in the oil pan, driven by the
crankshaft.

the thump sound at the intake could indicate bad rockers. you are gonna have did a little deeper to
know for sure.

If you find another bargain like that, let me know. Or better yet, fix yours and sell me that one. It could just be the rockers.

You should do everything to this replacement engine that you would do to yours to fix it anyway. Just my honest opinion

How many miles are on the engine in your Jeep now?

Don't know How much reading you have done, being a very newbie myself you can take my recommendations for what they are worth.

I would do the timing belt kit, the rockers, clean the EGR and accompanying parts, install a lift pump, a green tune and few other things. If somebody doesn't chip in with a more definitive list, I will post what I intend on doing to mine.

I was planning on using the timing tools I bought to set the engine in time and see if I lost a tooth somehow . The jeep has loss of power compared to another (2nd) one I bought for the engine but cant resist trying to get a title for it because its just too clean to junk. It smokes which could be unburnt fuel due to bad timing or bad rockers but has a rattle around 3k under load that makes me think its nothing easy. So I have mad jeeps here some not so good running wise and one runner w no title as of yet... its been a crazy couple of months .

From what i've read here, you should do the rockers when you do the timing, It seems to be the EGR that kills everything. The Green tune is supposed to take care of that. But you still have to do some disassembly and clean everything.

I was surprised at what I saw when I started looking at the caked carbon from inside the engine on ours

:-) hell ya thanks for replying! I have done my share of internal engine work but this jeep and diesel in general is a great opportunity for growth mechanically it means a lot to have this forum to study as well as a couple of online pdf shop manual downloads which are very helpful

GDE can probably fill in the details but IIRC there is a reading that can be pulled from the MAF sensor to determine or at least indicate if your rockers are bad. In addition the quick and dirty test is to pull the driver's side CAC hose off the flow control valve; crank up the engine; use a $1 bill to see if any puffs of air exit (blow out as opposed to suck in) the FCV; if so you have rocker issues.
