good day fellow jeepers, wondering if you guys can help this Canadian Soldier out, I have a 2006 libby CRD and it just stated making this knocking sound under normal to hard acceleration, it blows grayish smoke when this happens, I am thinking that a fuel injector is on its way out, while cruising, everything runs normally.

Air in the fuel sounds like a knocking sound as well, and while the worn rockers thing is obviously another concern I would probably bet money on the air in fuel. Air in the fuel isn't as noticable going down the highway as it is at idle.

Do you still have the original fuel head or have you installed the 2nd generation? If you still have the original, unplug both of the electrical connections that plug into the top quarter of the unit and see if you notice any wetness.

If you find any wetness, replace the fuel filter head with a 2nd generation.

After that, your options are to probably install a lift pump, but you could also check the torque on all your fuel lines that lead to the injectors, just be 100% ABSOLUTELY SURE YOU DO NOT TRY THIS WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING!

Also you could have popped one of the copper crush washers on your injectors and just need to repair that. Take a solo cup of water and dump it on the intake while the engine is running on top of the injector holes (preferable not super heated) and see if the water shoots up into the air on any of them, that will tell you if you have a washer issue or injector seal issue.

Let us know what you find.

the fuels filter head is the second gen, (11mm bleeder screw), the fuel filter was loose and was thus tightened, however this has not solved the problem, also did a injector cutout test which was normal so the injectors are indeed firing, there is no sign of leakage around the injectors either, it definitely sounds as if its misfiring on one cylinder even at idle, I have of course the dreaded EGR cel code, which may be stuck open, could that also be a reason for the misfire if too much exhaust is being injected into the combustion chamber? Ill be installing a new fuel filter tomorrow, just in case.
