No thanks, I'll stick with my 07WK CRD. I at least know what can go wrong with it.

How can something be for sale that isn't yet started building? Hmmmmmmmm...

And a summit 4x4 should be $54-56k, sounds like a heck of a mark-up.

Can you finance that for 30 years? That is twice as much as my parents paid for the house I grew up in.

Ecodiesel? That is *not* a well respected term in the automotive diesel world. Ask VW.

Was in the local Jeep portal picking up a few parts and took the oppurtunity to harrass my service mgr friend about how TOTALLY inept they are and were on the 05 and 06 crd, do they think they'll magically be able to deal with this new diesel in the Jeep and in the 1500 ? His response, "Ah, they'll be so da** expensive we won't sell many, if any." And this is quite a large volume dealer. I wouldn't look for a flaming success on this overpriced Chrysler adventure. I'm with Valve Stem on this one. Sorry MrMopar.

These are not yet available. The Jeep site says they are, but they are not. VM is still having some EPA related troubles (the EPA is the hold up), and the dealers cannot yet order them. I confirmed this by my friend who owns a Jeep dealership. He cannot even get a listing on the diesel option yet in his ordering system. $46K is insane. I'd rather spend $10K more and get a Porsche Cayenne diesel myself!

$25,000 would get you a fantastic condition VW Touareg V10 diesel (Ok, it is a 2004-2006) but those were always 3 times the quality of the Liberty.

I'm with Valve Stem on this - no more VM, no more Chrysler. The dealer friend is right - they won't sell diddly of them, and will claim that the USA is still "not interested in diesels" and this will be another orphan vehicle in short order.

Yo, Chrysler! It isn't that the USA isn't interested in diesels... It IS that you insist we buy a diesel with every excess option and platinum floormat plan that you can dream up to jack the price!

I believe they are in business to make money, and not to break even.

So what we can't afford them, they'll buld to order and not to stock. Good Luck.

I don't disagree that they are in business to make money. The way to make money is to charge a markup on things the customer selects because they DO want it.

If I go to build a car for myself and change from the cheapest four-hamster-power engine to one with 3 gerbils and a squirrel... Well, that should reasonably come with an added cost because of the change. HOWEVER, and what I think everyone dislikes, is selecting an ENGINE and being told "Sure, you can have that engine for a $2000 upcharge"... BUT you are also stuck taking a Limited trim level (+$$$) with leather seat upcharge, enhanced radio upcharge, mint-flavored airbag upcharge, and the baby-seal-blood windshield washer tank upcharge.

Why are we forced into those extra things that have no bearing on the ENGINE selection?

Because the simple profit margin of the engine upcharge isn't enough for them, OR they just don't want to actually sell many of these. Who buys diesels? People that want their vehicles to WORK for them. People who probably would select thick rubber floormats if they were an option, no carpeting, and a rip-and-stain-proof seat.

This isn't the type of customer that any car dealer wants, because those things are cheap and don't have a high product markup (profit margin) and those people ALSO tend to be the independent type that do their own maintenance, further removing profit that the company thinks they should be entitled to.

What will make Chrysler more money: selling 5000 at a $15k profit or selling 20000 at a $5k profit? They are pricing these things like Cummins Turbodiesels - high demand, cult following, willing to pay a premium. Unfortunately they think that diesels are a market unto themselves and not just another engine option as they are now, thanks to VW and Mercedes.

Only time will tell, can't judge this vehicle based and the poor performance of our CRD.

Well, I might take some issue with that.

Engineering team? VMM and DC. Same/same

Environmental regs? US, more restrictive than those that cause several major problems w CRD.

LAck of Dealer support? Check.

All of the major factors that precipitated the FUBAR that was DC's effort to produce diesels are in place. Maybe the end result will be different, but that's not how I would bet.

And for posterity's sake.... it's no longer DCJ, Daimler has been gone for years.

It's CJ, Chrysler Jeep is totally responsible now.

Holy crap that is nuts to pay for it. I was figuring I would replace my CRD with one in a few years but no where near that price.
