My AC began to fail earlier in the summer, and it used to drag on the engine at intersections. Then I got a chirp from the alternator pulley, so I replaced the alternator several weeks back and everything smoothed out. Around that same time though, the compressor seemed to stop working altogether. I can't even get moisture out of the cabin on full defrost.

I took the Jeep in today, and I hoped I would just need the freon filled. I just got the call back that it was only a little low, and the compressor won't kick on at all. He said that the relay is getting power, but ... I may not understand his comment completely here ... both wires leading to the relay were hot. He said that one wire should be hot while the other should not be. He thinks that I may have a short somewhere. He also said though that the current setup of two hot wires should have kept the compressor on the entire time. He's concerned that if he finds the short and fixes it, I may still need a new compressor because it may have been burned out as a result.

My question: Is our CRD AC system run the same as the system in the 3.7 Liberty? In other words, is there any trick or history to ours that I should know about? I didn't go to a dealer, and this is a new mechanic for me as I've moved to a new town. I don't know how often this guy sees CRDs so I'm worried that he may not know what he's doing.

It's automotive AC system, has nothing to do with the fact you have a CRD.The principles are the exact same if you have a honda 4 clinder,2.8 CRD,or 18 wheeler as there AC systems all work the same regardless of the engine. The components maybe a little different but the engine does not matter.

The only automotive AC system that is completely different from the norm is AC systems in a hybrid(mainly prius) or electric vehicle.

Thanks for the quick response TJKJ. I got it just before I went in to talk to the tech, so I was happy to know everything was normal for this guy.

After almost three hours of labor, the tech found the broken ground. The ground connects to the fuel heater and the AC condenser, and it was broken under the fuel head down near the starter. Just like many have posted here about shorted wires near the fuel head, the whole bundle was rubbing against a bolt down near the starter. He said that I should have noticed a drag on the battery if it sat for a few days, and he is right. I was afraid I had air in the fuel once it sat for a few days because it used to start hard, but the drag makes more sense. Good thing I got the big Sears Platinum beast this past winter.

This was my first wire short on the Jeep since new, so I guess I made a good run.
