So... not trying to bring a thread back from the dead but did you get it installed Savage? How's the sound? I'm sort of considering a new muffler this summer, but I dunno if my cash flow agrees with me lol.

Yeah, i had the same cash flow issues, and so i didn't end up getting the muffler installed (yet....) might be another month or so, if i'm lucky.

I love the Flowmaster. My cousin always said it sounded like a v8 when I pulled in his driveway and he was inside. Some may say it is too loud but if it is too loud you are too old. I must mention there is a performance difference when you switch to a higher flow muffler. The RPMs seem to ring up quicker because it can flow easier. Keep in mind a car motor is just a big air compressor. When I switched to synthetic, K&N, and Flowmaster the MPG also increased so I can tell you I have saved money given the miles I drive. Pulling a trailer seemed easier too when everything was changed.

My MPG savings have accumulated over time:
old MPG 18 average
new MPG 20 average

2 more miles per gallon

17.5 gallon gas tank

17.5 * 18 = 315 miles per tank old
17.5 * 20 = 350 miles per tank new

35 extra miles per tank

35 / 20 = 1.75 gallons saved per tank

1.75 * $2.50/gallon = $4.38 saved per tank

Pay back for the K&N and Flowmaster would be under 12,000 miles!

Those are crazy MPG stats man! I barely get 14 mpg! With a Flowmaster 40 and a drop in K&N!!!! O well...I also have an ARB bumper and lots of other heavy crap. To answer the thread...go with the Flowmaster 40...really loud for a V6 and makes a great sound...no rice burner Jeep for me...

kj in a tight spot,

It has to be the weight difference. I average 20 even once I got the 245's. That is not being easy on it either, I just drive it. Luckily I have 75mph speed limits most of the way to work but I come from the foothills and get stuck in traffic as well. Maybe the synthetic oil is the biggest difference?

I bought a Flow 40 on Ebay brand new for $37 including shipping and payed a private shop $40 to weld it in. That was a while back and they go for a higher price on Ebay now but it's still alot cheaper than what you guys are talking about.

I have two questions...do I want the Flowmaster 40 Original Series, Delta Flow or Super Series? And what diameter do I need, 2.5" or 2.25"?

A link to my Borla muffler. $145 parts and install. $100 for either Flowmaster or Magnaflow parts and install from the shop I went to.

Original is the "classic" sound...very loud and ballsy. Delta Flow is a quieter version, from outside and inside the vehicle. Super 40 is supposed to be their loudest, "most aggressive" muffler they make. Check out their website, it has awesome sound clips.

Actually Super 40 sounds the same as the original 40 series just with less interior noise and better flow.

Then I guess I'll probably go with the Super then, so my interior doesn't get too loud...

I went yesterday and got a original Flow 40 put on my 02 3.7L sport. It only cost me 115 + tax installed. It sounds just like a V8, not ricey at all. I'll try to get a sound clip up on here in the next few days.

how's the interior noise, will a stock audio system drown it out or is it going to be too penetrating? Any particular RPM ranges where it tends to resonate more? I'm looking into getting one installed this weekend, so the sooner i can get all the info compiled the better, it's a toss up b/w the 50 SUV, the Super 40 and the Delta 40. I've got an aftermarket stereo that i love to listen too, but it's not amped yet and there's no sound deadner in the car yet. I make pretty long trips now and then so droning would be an issue. Thanks for the info.

-Savage-

One more thing, I went to two independent shops, and out of the two, one wants $200.00 (ouch) and the other doesn't have the best rep. However, the two bigger places i went to (Mineke and Midas) both have standards to uphold (i would assume) and want anywhere from $160 to $175 for the install, would it be a bad idea to use a bigger company as opposed to a smaller shop?

I'd go to whoever has the best reputation for customer serivce and quality. If that happens to be a larger shop in your town, so be it.

I talked to the Flowmaster tech help guys and they all recommend the Delta 50 (not SUV). They said the 40 is made for 8cyl and the SUV tone is too deep for the 6 cyl liberty. The Delta 50 is qieter than the 40 but louder than the SUV 50.

I also talked to the muffler shop down the street (authorized dealer) who will do it all for $150 out the door. Even the Flowmaster guys said that $150 was the most anyone should pay.

The interior noise with the original 40 isn't too bad at all. Any music playing will pretty much drown it out. It has a nice loud rumble at idle and speeds under 50 but when you hit highway speeds it becomes almost as quiet as the stock setup. So long drives shouldn't be a problem at all.

Be sure to tell me about it savage. You seem to want the same thing I do.

Well i already called the muffler shop and had them order a Delta 50. My mom is probably gonna be driving this while i'm in college, so i don't want it to be TOO loud (niether does she). So the muffler should be in early on Sat. and installed by the early afternoon, or at least that's the plan.
