I have a 05 KJ renegade.I just ordered Rusty's 2.5" strut spacer kit.I am trying to find the best mud tire that will fit!!! I read some people are running 31" tires? Then I see some with 245/75/16? Bigger is better to me but I don't want to damage my rig just yet...

I got the 245/75/16 MT/R's and I love them. In fact I liked them so much and my buddy saw how much I love them and he got a set for his TJ. I will warn you these are NOISY. At slow speeds it is LOUD and at highway speeds they are just loud. Either way they let me go alot of places.

245/75 16 is basically 30.5, or commonly called 31. MT stands for Maximum Traction, but a lot of people call them mud tires.

245/75 is the stock Jeep Wrangler Rubicon size and is what most of us run. some run 255s and 265s, but rubbing is a much more major issue with those.

The Goodyear MT/R's are great for rocks, but I believe you'd be best off with something else for mud.

     "Maximum Traction"

It stands for MUD Tire. It ain't maximum traction for the street or sand.

That was a good one though

most of the answers you will get will be opinions it would be easer to answer if we knew what typ of terain you ran on most of the time other than the street?

i will give you my .02 woth now
go cheep i know that you could get some kind of mud terain tire for under $100 each on a 16" rim buy 5 at the same time
this is what i did because i do a lot of wheeling we do not see any rocks unless we travel vry far but we do see roots and they pop even the best tires
so i go cheep found some for $70 a tire inc m&b that way when i get the unavoidable flat i am only out $70 not $150 get my point?
if you only go off road 1 or 2 times a year and drive the jeep 50 miles a day to work then a chep mt is not for you but a allterain would look good ride good
and do ok in most off road situations

now bigger is always better until it gets in the way
rubbing is bad ,rember my .02, a rubbing tire at full stuff will have the force applied from the weight of the jeep + the force of it rubbing on what ever it is rubbing that will = 1 wheel peel and that will = stuck
so i would go a little smaller than the max or go with a 30X9.5 and not a 31X10.5
you will only loose .5" in ground clearance wich in the world of jeeps is not much just mark it on a piece of paper then put that on the ground next to your jeep

Are you sure MT/R stands for maximum traction/rocks? I was told the MT/R's was orininally designed for the military but they didn't want them and MT/R stood for military tread/revised.That's what I was told because the goodyears the humvee's run are MT or "military tread",but I could have been told a bunch of bulls#$t from the goodyear guy's.

Do you just make all this crap up as you go or do you have to think about it.

MT/R according to Goodyear (they should know what they are talking about here) stands for maximum traction reinforced. The original Goodyear MT had problems with sidewall punctures so they improved it by reinforcing the sidewall and tread.

Quote:
The Goodyear Wrangler MT/R (Maximum Traction/Reinforced) was developed to meet some of the most punishing conditions found in America. From the rock beds of Moab, Utah to the mud pits at Goodyear’s San Angelo Proving Grounds, the Wrangler MT/R has earned the right to be called Goodyear’s toughest Wrangler Off-Road Maximum Traction radial. However, conquering mud is only one weapon in the arsenal of this tire, withstanding daily driving abuse is another.

Do us all a favour and do some research before you post again.

OOPs, someone's rose colored glasses are fogged up

The title "Maximum Traction" tickled me, thats all

Tarkus, I don't care what the Acronym stands for, But if you think it has "maximum" traction on the street over a Goodyear Eagle or in sand over other Goodyears, or the drag strip over their slicks, or in the MUD over other Good brands, you are sadley mistaken.

Tarkus said: "Do you just make all this crap up as you go or do you have to think about it." & "Do us all a favour and do some research before you post again."

Those were good ones. Tarkus, you are a Comedian

OK Tarkus, It would have "Maximum" traction in the MUD & Rocks

Chris, Here is a link with a few reviews:
http://www.4x4review.com/products/tires/

Consider Cooper and Maxxis too.

MT/R's are a swell tire though...expensive too.

the1jferg - are you just flame-baitin' here?

Goodyear says the acronym is for "maximum traction reinforced". If the people who make the thing says that's what it stands for then that's what it stands for.

As to your comments on whether they actually offer the most grip of any tire...well...your own link has the editors at 4x4review.com tripping over themselves to come up with new ways of saying how remarkable the MT/R is off-road. And I believe more than a few of the people on this board, people who regularly have their rigs in places like Big Bear, Moab, and Florence Junction, love their MT/Rs.

How 'bout you load a set of Goodyear Eagles onto your Liberty and try and run one of our fine Arizona trails?

Yall must be mistakin. The MT/R is an AWSOME tire, I never said it wasn't ? :?: Darn right the review was claiming how remarkable the MT/R is off-road, thats why I posted the link. It shows a few options and opinions on various tires because CHRIS never said anything about MT/R's, he was soliciting opinions.

See, thats the difference between the amatuer and a pro. You folks are trigger happy & emotional, missing the target.

Chris asked: "whats the best mud tire that will fit"...Thats a trial & error, research and opinion deal. A very debatable subject indeed. I didn't want him to believe everything the "Cereal box" or "Sea Monkey" add's say. The "Ultimate Warrior" ain't the best wrestler, and there ain't no such thing as the Easter Bunny. Forgive me for steering someone in the direction of deeper thought.

The FUNNY thing is, JOKERS, yall must agree that the MT/R is a "MUD" tire or you would've never posted a recommendation to someone asking for "MUD" tire advice.     WEEEEEEEEE, what a conundrum !!!!!

I never made a Recommendation, but was flamed just the same. Today, I choose to view the flames as a JOKE

I'm no tire expert, "I did sleep in a Holiday Inn Express, last night"   I'll reserve my opinion because I believe tires are only a small part of the equation and the small differences in traction & biting surfaces between MUD Tires is insignificant.

The FIRE, READY, AIM, method don't work too well

i will agree with jferg on this 100% and as always thats just my .02 wich is what was asked
i think the whole point is or needs to be understood that some folks like some things and some think they are a waste of money
sure goodyear says they are the best thing since sliced bread they make them??? what the name stands for is almost irrelivant how ever i have been told by some one who works for chrystler and regularly drives jeeps befor you ever see them that "the main reason that goodyear calls the mt/r max tract ren
is because some where in the fine print of the waranty for all chrystler and for that mater every vehical they say something about over sized offroad tires voiding the waranty" so they are not mud tires?? ok now that i have said to much
yall can bash me now but this is still my .02 and i can still have that
